Isn't fundamental change grand?

Yes, but what if the health care workers weren’t supplied with the proper coverings. Someone told me they saw somewhere that the nurses in Dallas didn’t have the full hazmat style suits but the routine paper coverings which are used to stop the spread of less deadly infections. Don’t know how true this is.

True, and therefore you get the Nurses Union fighting back at CDC’s chief.

I’d guess they know that, but it’s not as easy as he makes it sound, as 436 health care workers have discovered so far this year. Could Gupta do it? Could he treat patients all day every day and never make a mistake with sharps or when removing the clothing? It’s not as easy as “cover your skin”, although that’s a nice sound bite if your goal is to rake in money for entertaining rather than to inform and educate.

How about we have Gupta dress in protective clothing, work with sponges soaked in red dye for eight hours, and then remove his protective clothing. My guess is he’ll have quite a few red spots even after following his own “cover your skin” advice.

To put that 436 HCW mortality number in perspective it’s greater than the total number of doctors Sierra Leone had at the start of the EVD epidemic. One would think that as a physician that threat would remain uppermost in his mind.

As for the situation here we have four HcW, 3 drs and 1 nurse/cw, who have recovered. Two nurses, one confirmed, one suspected/probable patients so far.

One EVD fatality on US soil, the illegal runner Duncan.

Of the seven EVD patients here 6 HCW, 1 civilian.

Both Brantley and Writebol have pondered on how they acquired EVD and remain mystified.

It’s fair to conclude that this EVD strain has something extra in it’s killer profile. Which Gupta did not address IIRC.

Don't tell us, show us!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I think the word "hero" is overused and often used inappropriately. However, the doctors and nurses who are still working as they watch their colleagues and friends drop are heroic. The MSF doctors and nurses (and I know several) who go to war zones, Marburg, Lassa, and now Ebola outbreaks to treat people who need medical care are heroes. They know what they are doing, and they know the risks. They also know what will happen to the patients (and in this case to the countries) if they don't go or don't stay where they are needed.

He’s just upset that this scare is hurting Obama in the polls.

A genuinely concerned person wouldn’t make a statement like this.

Covering your skin is the first part. When you are done dealing with an Ebola patient at some point you have to take the protective gear OFF. That has to be done without coming into contact with the outside of the gear that you were wearing.
