Democrats Eyeing Marijuana as an Opiate for the Masses

As marijuana restrictions are eased throughout the nation, lawmakers from both parties are looking to the drug as a potential cash cow to shore up budget deficits and fill local and state coffers. For Democrats, however, a far more insidious pattern is developing, as recent moves by left-wing indicate they see in marijuana as a powerful tool to further control their largely poor and minority constituency with this 21st century "opiate for the masses."

The city of Berkeley, CA recently moved to institute policy requiring "medicinal" marijuana outlets to allot certain amounts of their product to be distributed free to lower-income residents. Beginning next summer, anyone earning less than $32,000 per year and possess a prescription for medical marijuana will have the drug provided free of charge. Democrats up and down California are looking to replicate this policy statewide and Democratic Party lawmakers in Sacramento are crafting legislation to quickly add this to the docket while they still hold super-majorities in the legislature.

For those who don't live in a state which offers "medicinal" marijuana, one should understand that whatever intentions were voiced to use this as a remedy exclusively for patients suffering from legitimate ailments were a sham. Not long after passing laws allow its usage, quack doctors immediately began advertising in urban weekly papers to offer consultations for prescription cards which allow consumers to visit the numerous dispensaries up and down the state to purchase weed. According to the California Department of Public Health, some 76,431 marijuana prescription cards have been issued to California residents.

While certainly within that number there are individuals suffering from cancer and the effects of treatments for other ailments that the soothing nature of the drug makes life more bearable, but in all the program is a mockery which provides run of the mill pot heads with a convenient outlet to purchase pot for themselves and friends.

Flashing his medicinal marijuana card with a huge smile, 25-year-old "Marco" (who preferred to not give his full name) is a typical consumer of medicinal marijuana. "Before I got my (medicinal marijuana) card, getting weed was a pain in the ass. You have to hassle with unreliable dealers and you never really know what you're getting." His glossy and redden eyes then brighten up, "Now I can find good quality, in a safe place without worrying about getting ripped off or busted." Marco states that he obtained his prescription card through a doctor he found on LA Weekly, listing "intense stress and anxiety" as his ailment.

LA Weekly fills a good portion of their advertising revenue (to compliment their other cash cow of ads from phone sex chat lines, massage parlors and escorts) with ads offering medicinal marijuana "evaluations" as well as from dispensaries offering their wares. The medical facilities are likewise a sham, as nearly any ailment the prospective patient purports to suffer from would seemingly qualify. Medical consultants and dispensaries alike often offer bonuses or discounts for referring other "patients."

marijuana One of many such ads to be found in LA Weekly and similar publications.

In Florida, "born again" Democrat Charlie Crist is throwing his support for a proposed ballot measure which would provide Florida with a similar medicinal marijuana system, in hopes of driving younger apolitical voters to the polls for he and other Democrats. Although it now appears to be coming back to haunt them, Democrats in Colorado successfully utilized the marijuana issue to turn formerly red Colorado blue. And although there are Republicans in various states that view the issue of marijuana use on a libertarian basis, it has been the Democratic Party that has made best use of the issue and appears to be tying it to its political future.

No measure however is more insidious than the strategy of liberals in California. By moving to offer free drugs to poorer residents, it furthers the belief of many critics who charge that Democrats are looking to dumb-down their constituency, relegating them to little more than stoned zombies who will toil through their life in a daze, moving through life in a haze of welfare, drudgery and (now) free pot. The Democratic Party of the 21st century seems quite proud to now be a political movement defined by abortion, sodomy and easier access to drugs.

While one can rightfully argue that marijuana doesn't hold the dangers of physical addiction and risks of overdose, and is a more or less benign drug in terms of physical side effects, its most dangerous consequence is the sapping of ambition. Nearly every American adult has tried marijuana at some point in their life and a consensus would agree that a major aspect of smoking weed is that it makes boredom enjoyable. One can waste an entire day, or decade, enjoying the minor euphoria of the drug, content with little else, save some bad movies and junk food at hand. It would be hypocritical of myself to deny ever sampling the drug, although I can say with absolute conviction I am thankful that marijuana was not legal, or available for "medicinal use" when I was in my early 20's. As they have so often on other issues, the following video displays the simple wisdom of South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone perfectly summarizes the negative aspects of marijuana.

That the left-wing has jumped on the marijuana bandwagon with such gusto and such a callous disregard for the possible negative consequences it has when made available with impunity is yet another example of an ideology that has sold its soul for political expediency. As self-proclaimed "champions of the poor" they seem more than willing to have these Americans squander their futures and the opportunities of life for a free bag of weed. While Democrats have become increasingly hostile to Christianity and Judaism, they seem quite comfortable with eyeing marijuana as its favored opiate for the masses, and a further form of control for the same people they claim to fight for.

“keep the masses stoned so they won’t care about much of anything. Instant useful idiots.”

While I don't care if some one wants to smoke MJ or not smoke MJ, you are right. It steals the will and some of the same people who go ballistic over second hand cigarette smoke think nothing about MJ use. The cognitive dissonance is large in this issue.

A secondary issue in medical MJ use that few take into account is since MJ is still illegal at the federal level it is an automatic dis-qualifier when trying to purchase a firearm. Voila’ back door gun control.

Was the author, himself, "under the influence" while writing this?

Bet you can't link to even one such post.

Speak of the devil.

Oh, so I'm the one who "pushes old rhetoric from Tim Leary or SDS slogans of the 60’s"? Again: Bet you can't link to even one such post.
