McDonalds employees who picketed for a better living wage (whatever that means) may come to regret that decision.... a McDonalds in Illinois replaced their cashiers with machines. The machines appear to be the cousins of the ones found in grocery stores, big box stores, and CVS that allow customers to complete transactions...
This is all basic economics, really. As costs of labor increase the added cost must be offset. In order to satisfy operating costs, produce a product consumers want to purchase, and still turn a profit, its perfectly reasonable for a company like McDonalds to look for cost-cutting alternatives....
Robot makers must be loving the recent NLRB ruling, as well, which held McDonalds parent corporation liable for franchisee employment practices. Can a kiosk file an employment grievance?

Yes. But that is my point.
Those who mix pops are creating their own pop flavour unique only to themselves.
Bring back the Styrofoam containers and fries cooked in beef tallow.
YES DAMN IT!!!
Lets Pizza serves 10.5 fresh pies 24 hours a day for $6 each. The machine kneads the dough,
sauces the pizza, adds toppings (you have a choice of three), and heats pizza in an oven
in less than three minutes.
Same here! Give me a machine anytime!
Me and the machines are twice as fast as the “person” at Home Depot !
And the machine is not moody, or worse!
That guy is mental! That’s how he met with that unfortunate accident!
What is really weird is that in my area the McDs have been hiring non-Hispanics.
I think someone has been paying attention to the fact that Chick-fil-A has been doing 15 times the business per store than Wendy’s with their management practices.
That would work.
Went by Sam’s today (of course the stuff they had the last time I was there was gone with an inferior product in it’s place) and there was a machine handing out pre-packaged apple sauce samples.
people that are quick to condemn a buck and a half cheeseburger don't understand the function of the buck and a half cheeseburger.
if they hit something special, they need to remember the ratio
Like.
It's crap. No other word for it, just "CRAP!"
It's worse than that. At a previous job I was responsible for hiring a team of workers for this new site. The director had relied on some idiot to scope out the number of employees to staff a critical call center, and went minimal to shave costs while guaranteeing 24/7 staffing. I repeatedly argued with the director that his figures were unrealistic, thinking he could staff a position for three shifts with three people. People need restroom breaks, lunch breaks, medical time off, sick time, vacations, etc. No way would the site run 24/7. I continued hiring people while arguing my points, and got fired. The next couple of people hired after me argued the same, and got fired. Finally the director was swapped out.
For this article, the cost of human cashiers is higher than $15/hour * 24 hours because you require overlap with more cashiers to cover absenteeism of all types. A machine would not require overlap at all, until it breaks - easy to swap out for that rare event.
That’s the thing - Thank You! I couldn’t call it up on google for some reason.
Obama just doesn’t get that businesses are not charities, though McDonalds for one is very charitable. They are in it to make money, and if labor costs go too high, someone will build a machine to replace the people.
We saw it happen in the auto industry. Entire assembly lines with maybe two workers instead of hundreds. Then mass transport. Then supermarkets. Now it’s fast food’s turn.
Some times I think the mis-understanding between the servers and the customers has everything to do with skin pigmentation. Sometimes when I enter a fast-food place and I see a staff of all one pigmentation I'll move along to a place that has a more diversified staff, it avoids a lot of problems with my order.
>>Apologies in advance..I want to ask a different, though related question: Has anyone tried to use the new self-checkout machines at WalMart?
I use them every time. Same for Winn-Dixie and Home Depot. If you follow the directions and know how to use a bar scanner, they work flawlessly.
mcdonalds food is terrible. i gave up on it years ago.
“people that are quick to condemn a buck and a half cheeseburger don’t understand the function of the buck and a half cheeseburger.”
You get it.
Thanks.
I even pull my sleeve down over my hand to open doors!
