I have been trying to find out if there's a list out there of the people, especially those still in power today, who endorsed Bush over Reagan in 1980.

James Baker. Wikipedia: In 1981, Baker was named White House Chief of Staff by President Ronald Reagan, in spite of the fact that Baker managed the presidential campaigns of Gerald Ford in 1976 and of George Bush in 1980 opposing Reagan.[7] He served in that capacity until 1985. Baker is considered to have had a high degree of influence over the first Reagan administration, particularly in domestic policy.

I voted for John Anderson who went 3rd party

So did I, and it was the last (purposefully) non-conservative vote I ever cast, though I confess I was duped a few times into voting for someone I thought was more conservative than he was--not something I will ever do again.

Exactly... Bush’s boss in the CIA was found floating in the Potomac and he was brought in to clean up all the dirty banking...and 4 years later...he is the nominee.

What difference does it make. Nearly all of Reagan’s people have been pundits on CNN and they are all RINOs.

Sadly Lee Atwater died early. We could use a guy like him now.

Thad Cochran.

Krauthammer was a democrat then, for Jimmy Carter. I guarantee you that Mitt Romney was either for Anderson or Bush. Just about all the Senators were for Bush, except a few, like Jesse Helms. I worked for a Republican Senator who was very anxious to not have to do what Reagan said. He would definitely have been a Bushie.

Anyway, isn’t it all ancient history by now?

I wish! The first thing Reagan did upon victory was surround himself with Bushies and we've been living under virtual Bush Presidents since 1983 or so. The events of that campaign haunt us and will for another generation.

If Reagan had picked Kemp in 1980 ........

Yep. Isn’t it odd how our allies have died off fairly early?

Remember, a lot of good conservatives didn’t trust Reagan. He was always much more “establishment” than we remember. They felt betrayed when he picked Scranton for VP in ‘76. And, he did some things in California that we’d rather not remember. “The New Right” were never in awe (Howard Phillips endorsed Connolly) and I remember Buckley opposed Reagan on the Panama Canal. I believe the hard core conservative in the primaries was Phil Crane. Reagan was the “safe” conservative.

Not endorsing Reagan in 1980 wasn’t as “RINOish” as it may seem today.

Cochran goes back to 76, fighting hard for Ford against Reagan, and then in 80, was against Reagan. I assume he was a Bushie, but he may have been for Baker first. He was a Democrat, switched sometime in the 70s, as I recall.

Willard never supported Reagan or Bush, he said as much. He likely voted Carter, Mondale & Dukakis.
