Long Guns Turned In at Phoenix event in May, 2013
There will be a gun turn in event on 26 July, 2014 in Baltimore City, Maryland. While these events are commonly labeled with the propaganda term "buyback" the guns were never owned by the people attempting to buy them.
The location for the event will be at the New All Saints Catholic Church in the 4400 block of Liberty Heights Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event offers a $100 gift card for turning in guns. From wbaltv.com:
get a $100 gift card to ShopRite. Officials said no questions will be asked upon the exchange. These events offer Second Amendment activists the potential for picking up some firearms for reasonable prices. The gift cards offered for firearms generally undervalue a significant number of the firearms turned in.
Howard County police granted the I-Team access to the ballistics testing that happened after a 2013 collection in that county. None of the weapons that were test-fired came up as stolen, Weiner reported, and it's believed none of the turned-in weapons were ever used in a crime. The potential for problems with stolen firearms is discussed in this article linked to below. The risk seems exceptionally small.
What is the Legal Risk of Buying a Gun at a Turn In (buy back)?
What are the Gun Laws in Maryland?
“None of the weapons that were test-fired came up as stolen, “
Naturally. Ballistics testing does not work. They took the MLK murder rifle and fired controlled shots through it. Experts were unable to determine what rifle they came from- even though it was a controlled test.
And how many of the millions of guns owned by FReepers have had a ballistics baseline recorded?
As for “buybacks” I look for cheap C&R rustbuckets that still go [snap] when the trigger is goosed, or people at estate sales willing to see gramp’s shotgun gone for a Jefferson or two. It’s profitable.
What are the issues with private sales at “buybacks”, and in which states can’t you do that?
There are a few states that prohibit private sales, that require that all sales go through a dealer and become public. California is one. One group in California brought a friendly FFL dealer to an event to facilitate transfers.
New Jersey has rules that make private sales at these sort of events practically impossible.
The legislation passed in Colorado would rule out private sales at these events. Perhaps other freepers know of restrictions in other states, but for the vast majority, private sales are legal, especially of long guns. I believe that Hawaii also requires sales to be made through dealers. Knowledgable freepers can add to the above.
The article with the link talks about potential problems with stolen guns at these events. They are rare and problems highly unlikely.
I would never enter Maryland with a gun even if I knew I was doing so legally. I would not even think of buying one there.
It is a shame that some nice guns with fine workmanship will be destroyed by these insane people in Maryland.
oops.
I had a friend who worked for me at a Summer retreat. He was about as handsome as they come. He was tall, blond. powerful and the best worker I ever had. He was from Florida and was typically conservative.
His girlfriend was just about as pretty as he was handsome. In other words they were one of those rare couples who looked stunning together. She had natural blonde hair just like him. They got along great until after the Summer he visited her in Maryland. He was very conservative and her parents were weird liberal. I don’t think his girl friend cared one way or the other. Anyway he got in fights with her parents and that broke them up.
They really would have made a nice couple.

That’s probably the best thing that happened to him. Would he have married into that sick family...
I wanted to go but have previous plans. ShopRite donates the money and one of the VP’s has made dumb anti gun comments. Even though they are close, we stopped weekly grocery shopping there a year ago.
