NC: North Carolina Repeals Gun Registration

Gun registration was never popular in North Carolina. The only county that required that guns be registered was Durham County, but that law was passed in 1935, and had been grandfathered in when state preemption of gun laws was codified in 1995.   Just because the law only applied to Durham County did not mean that it did not affect other people in the state or around the nation. The law required guns to be registered.   If you were passing through Durham County, and possessed guns that were not registered in the County, you could have been charged with a crime.

It does not appear that many were.   Like many antique laws, this one acted as an old, out of date, rusty landmine, waiting for the unsuspecting victim in just the wrong circumstances to go off. The landmine has been disarmed.   Much of the work required to repeal the law came from Grass Roots North Carolina (GRNC), a local nonprofit group that supports the right to keep and bear arms.

The registry consisted entirely of paper forms in alphabetical order. It is claimed that it was never put into digital format. As someone who has dealt with those issues, I can affirm that converting old paper forms to digital media can be time consuming and expensive.

They Tax your car/truck EVERY YEAR when you get tags. State Inspections are a PIA!

Things are not cheap.

You have to take a complete new drivers test to get a DL, no trade ins no matter how long you have been driving.

That's just the top of My list.

Then I move on to THEY GOT VERY FEW PLACES THAT DO BBQ BRISKET!!!

When one does find BBQ Brisket it doesn't have pickles and onions with it. If you ask for them they sautee the onions! and the pickles come out warm!!!

They got that nasty vinegar bbq sauce.

They put coleslaw on the bbq pig sandwiches.

Where I came from those are ALL BBQ Felonies!

As frequent visitor can attest to your list. The tax on cars, which goes down every year based on bluebook value— is ridiculous and counter productive. Most people drive a 91 or older car, souped up and not liable for emissions or any other “inspections” except safety (brake, lights horns, turn signals etc). So, while cheap an annual annoyance as part of getting registration renewed (along with centrally billed county tax on the vehicle which must be paid before renewal).

This is antiquated English style law.

You left out a biggie— highest gasoline tax east of Miss. River. Why? Because the long haulers coming in over I-40 from way out West have to cross the state straight over to intersect I-85 north to merge to I-95. And they buy massive tankloads of fuel in NC to do so. The “conservative” state legislature will not roll back the gallon taxes (rate based btw on consumption) nor will they the useless inspections, or the county vehicle taxes. Aside from these, though generally these are conservatives of both “parties”

State has been destroyed by 3 federal/statist/bankster effects. First, the furniture industry (great craftsmen of multigenerations— no longer making quality US furniture). Second: Textiles (all off shored to SE Asia, Indonesia, chinka, etc. many many empty factory buildings for lease or crumbled. Finally— Tobacco (declared a health hazard, taxed to death but NOT banned) is grown only on spec contract— still the largest producer in the country but the sources of tobacco are largely foreign (Zimbabwe).

BBQ— a source of contrast... even from NC to SC to GA to AL it all varies. New experience the finely chopped mound of pit cooked pork with apple vinegar sauces and rubs. It’s great stuff... and different than Texas brisket (which also we love). BBQ varies all across this country. Never been to KC but use the sauce base for our own.

Do have open carry. Bushmasters are made in NC, and Rugers. And.. do defend marriage as being a man and a woman, with a state referendum re-affirming constitutional and statutes. Supported by... the conservative church attending black population in gross reaction to the queer leadership of state dems.

This info have gathered through many down home trips through the state.

I've always been of the opinion that all laws should be sunsetted x amount of years. Any law over 100 years old would sunset in five years. Over 50 in 10. The pols would be so busy defending some favs they'd be too busy making new ones.

Although a bit different, The government got Capone for tax evasion, not his crimes. So, like that rusty landmine, they do come in handy to nail some oily criminal - or anyone who isn't subservient enough.
