The IRS has informed the House Ways and Means Committee that it has lost Lois Lerner email messages from January 2009April 2011. Harkening back to the allegedly accidental erasure of 18 1/2 minutes of critical Oval Office recordings that contributed to Richard Nixon’s resignation from office, the IRS attributes the loss of Lerner email to a computer crash.
Some email survives: the agency retains Lerner email to and from other IRS employees during this period. The IRS claims it cannot produce email written only to or from Lerner and outside agencies or groups, such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or offices of Democrat congressmen. Funny how that works.
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp has issued the following statement, which seems to me short of the harsher indictment that is warranted at this point:
The fact that I am just learning about this, over a year into the investigation, is completely unacceptable and now calls into question the credibility of the IRSs response to Congressional inquiries. There needs to be an immediate investigation and forensic audit by Department of Justice as well as the Inspector General.
Just a short time ago, Commissioner Koskinen promised to produce all Lerner documents. It appears now that was an empty promise. Frankly, these are the critical years of the targeting of conservative groups that could explain who knew what when, and what, if any, coordination there was between agencies. Instead, because of this loss of documents, we are conveniently left to believe that Lois Lerner acted alone.
This failure of the IRS requires the White House, which promised to get to the bottom of this, to do an Administration-wide search and production of any emails to or from Lois Lerner. The Administration has repeatedly referred us back to the IRS for production of materials. It is clear that is wholly insufficient when it comes to determining the full scope of the violation of taxpayer rights.
Reminder: The charge that Richard Nixon “endeavored” to misuse the IRS made its way into the second of the three articles of impeachment voted against him by the House Judiciary Committee. Nixons efforts to misuse the IRS were futile. They went nowhere. Nixon and his henchmen desired the IRS to screw their political opponents, but their efforts were a pathetic failure.
Nixon henchman Jack Caulfield astutely complained that the IRS was a monstrous bureaucracy
dominated and controlled by Democrats. As we have come to see, Caulfield was on to something. By contrast with Nixons failures to misuse the IRS, the IRS has very effectively screwed Obamas political opponents, and we have yet to learn what the president knew and when he knew it.
Lerner’s inbox contains emails from both internal and external senders. But somehow the “crash” only whacked those emails of external origin. Riight.
Lois "Rosemary" Lerner demonstrates how easy it is to delete two years worth of emails [but only those to and from outside agencies] plus all backups on tape, DVD, and microfiche.
You and I both know those emails weren’t lost. If they no longer exist, it’s only because they were deliberately destroyed. That can’t remain secret, this phony excuse is bound to unravel in relatively short order. The brazen gall of even attempting such a lie is astounding.
Next they’ll be blaming the ghost of Rose Mary Woods for the alleged “crash” and maybe tie in Fawn Hall for conjuring her spirit.
Not only that, but her sent emails would have existed both locally and on the IRS [not the external agencies] servers.
BTTT!
HA! Good one!
Steve Stockman has already requested the IRS metadata from the NSA. LOL
Emails are on servers, and have backup servers on top of backup servers. It’s just about impossible to lose emails this way.
Absolutely, my friend.
This is something that came right out of the 0bama/handlers/thugs playbook. If they're not nailed on this it will only be because no one follows up on it but we know there's a few honest Conservatives, it'll be up to them.
and where are the BACKUPS!!!!!!!!!!!!! REQUIRED BY LAW
You have to be joking. The IRS is like the CIA and the FBI, they do not answer to anyone. Everyone answers to them
This is complete and total BS. No organization would allow e-mail to be stored on the workstation. It would be stored in the server e-mail store, which would be backed up daily.
And if the Federal Government really allows behavior that would likely get any private company prosecuted (failing to maintain official records) and allowed her to download the messages to her hard drive and erase them from the server, then they can send me the hard drive. I am a forensic computer examiner, and as long as the disks are not physically destroyed or deliberately wiped, I can recover most if not all that was lost.
Eric Holder will tell the FBI to get to the bottom of this. /s
Who needs forensics guys ? Restore from backup tapes: requirement by long-standing law and practice is 5 year’s worth of data on tape, stored offsite. .
The IRS promised to release Lerner email’s until the DOJ read them and found out THE FOREIGNER would be in a whole lot of trouble. Then they had to either erase them or have him change his NOT EVEN A SMIDGEN to A WHOLE LOT OF SMIDGEN.
I’d be outraged, but my outrager is plum tuckered out.
Cyber Sandy Berger.
If 2 yrs are missing then the crash was recent.
Document that crash.
Can’t we just call Putin and have Ed Snowden send us his backup files?
Surely there is a trail documenting the outage, help desk tickets, hardware service call, and the like.
