17,000 Marines were surrounded by 120,000 Chinese troops. Their vicious, gut-wrenching breakout from their encirclement, though hardly remembered these days, is one of the most harrowing and heroic tales in U.S. military history.

There is no greater trust between men than that which exists between Marines.
I had two uncles there. Neither knew each other. One was Dad’s younger brother, a Marine Gunny. The other Mom’s BIL, an Air Force FAC.
My wife’s uncle is still there. They never recovered his body.

I’ve tried to read every account of the battle I could and am more humbled and my respect for the Corps increases each time I read more.
Military ping.

Marine
They get together regularly, although my uncle says that there are fewer and fewer every year. Sometimes a bunch of them talk at educational events. My nephew did a school report and my uncle arranged for several of the Marines to contribute by telling him their stories.
We need to listen to them and remember what happened. Nothing PC about it.
