A Texas teenager whose date died in their hotel room after her senior prom has sent a series of emotional text messages to a friend suggesting she passed away following an overdose. The unidentified date frantically called 911 on Saturday morning after waking up in a North Houston Hyatt to find that 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez was not breathing. Investigators said that the MacArthur High School senior showed no outward signs of injury and the results of her autopsy are pending. They added that her boyfriend is not suspected of any crime. Now text messages that he sent to one of Gomez's friends on Saturday afternoon have indicated that investigators believe she might have overdosed, the Houston Chronicle reported.

WOW!! I am sorry to see the poor girl die but what type of parent(s) would allow their HS age kid to spend the night at a hotel room for Prom Night with their date. Is this now the new trend?

It dates back to at least 1995 when I went to prom. Most parents gave up parenting in the 70’s and 80’s. There’s probably more decent parenting going on now than when I was a teen.

Heard this on the radio this AM. The boyfriend’s mom got the room for them.

Perhaps the date was 18 or older. Perhaps even worse the parents booked the room.

I went to HS during the mid-80s and never heard of anybody booking a room for Prom Night.

I wonder if the ‘racist’ hotel clerk asked to see an ID to rent them a room.

The parents are probably part of the "they're going to do it anyway" crowd that I had to hear about from my kids as I said "No".
But, they were their kids' best friends and oh, so popular.

Me neither, but I graduated in 1972 - and there were plenty of back roads...

yep...my son went to his prom on Saturday and most of the after parties were real tame. No alcohol - just food, watching movies, games.
When I went in the 80's, quite a number of people got hotel rooms. One group of parents in our class rented a party bus, stocked it with a keg, and let their kids stay at a rented beach house. It appears much tamer now.

Sadly this has become a trend over the past 10-15 years. Not every parent allows this but it is becoming more frequent. Some students actually have their parents pay for the rooms under the guise of “hanging out” after the prom.

Times have really changed. How can a HS kid rent a room? High school seniors this time of year have generally passed their 18th birthday. As legal adults, they can do lots of things.

They have games and movies (PG13). This year they are having Lazer Tag, Pizza (supplied by one of the local places at 1/2 price.

The boyfriends mom got the room for them. That's what I thought. The kid probably doesn't have a credit card.

The deceased was going to study to be a pharmaceutical technician?
Not much ‘inate talent’ for her chosen field, I’d say.
Matter of fact, this sad situation is sufficient to make me double check anything done by anyone I am not totally sure is both qualified and motivated to perform their job correctly.
