A reading assignment has some parents in New Hampshire confused and upset.
The controversial book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult is required reading for some 9th grade students at Gilford High School. The book is a fictional story about a school shooting and has been part of the curriculum since 2007.
School officials say that the book contains important themes, but parents say that message is overshadowed by what some call pornographic content on one page. The book was assigned to students last Monday, but the school failed to give parents of freshmen students notice of the sexually explicit content in the novel. One page of the book contains a graphic description of rough sex between two teenagers.
Some parents are outraged, and attended a school board meeting to make their feelings known.
William Baer, whose 14-year old daughter is a student at the school, was one of the parents who spoke out at the meeting. He was promptly arrested for doing so:
Baer, who is an attorney, told EAGnews that the school has no business introducing such themes to students, and questioned why it is acceptable for the state, through its schools and agents, to mandate reading and discussing this kind of material.
In a written response to EAGnews, Gilford school leaders admitted they didnt warn parents of the books controversial nature like they have in previous years, and promised to send a letter to the home of all students who are currently assigned the book.
Its a little late now, isnt it?
The incident at Gilford isnt unique: reading assignments that contain pornographic material seem to be more and more of a normal occurrence, especially since the introduction of Common Core curriculum in schools.
In his article Sex and the Public Schools, Michael Snyder discusses ways schools are sexualizing our children at younger and younger ages. Some public schools are mandating sex education for kindergarteners. Earlier this year, a middle school in Kansas decided that adding anal sex, oral sex, and touching were appropriate topics to add to their health class curriculum.
If your child must attend public school, you may want to pay close attention to the assignments they being given.
Yes, it is very important to be respectful of Robert’s Rules of Order and be nice and polite when parents have to complain that our children are being sexually abused by the public education system.
Even in a courtroom a judge would ordinarily give a warning before taking someone to jail.
Someone SHOULD be going to jail here, but it is not this man.
I watched the video, and I did not hear the officer warn the parent that you must leave, and leave now or you would be arrested. Instead, he said “come on”, meaning what? Come on!
Is that a lawful command, “come on” that must be obeyed whenever it is issued by an officer of the law? Must we be in fear of the policeman who says come on, and if we do not jump, at his command, are we subject to arrest? Did the officer not like what the parent said?
I am very pro police in most situations, but this is so wrong in so many ways. Doesn’t the parent have the right to speak, and if so, only until an officer commands, “come on”?
The school board members who sit by and let this take place should be ashamed.

No, he should be respectful, while making is clear behind the scenes that the board answers to the people and that he will run candidates against them if necessary. Rants and publicity stunts like that are counter productive.
Exactly
Some bright enterprising individual should hire a 20 year old couple and have them pose as 9th grade students. During discussion of the “rough sex” part of the book they would stand up and show the rest of the students how it’s done.
Overriding parental rights, schools assuming too much authority surreptitiously, not letting parents in on the brainwashing of our children. Taking away gun rights. Taxing the people into oblivion.
No offense to those Freepers from the NE corner of the contiguous states, but I'd rather live in India than live in that region. I'd have more freedom.
Btw, I live in the SW. We still have some vestige of freedom here. For a while....
I agree with much of what you say. Arresting the man (if that is
how it ended) made the school as “over the top” as the parent.
The cop should have escorted the man out of the room and
given him the opportunity to cool down and a verbal warning.
And, that should be the school policy, as well.
Something tells me that if there was a group of liberal parents
protesting something there would have been no arrest and
maybe no cop either. I wonder if having a cop at meetings like
this is even normal policy. The school just earned themselves
a FOX News segment. Good job, morons.
first of all government shouldn't even have the authority to have schools and indoctrinate kids
you people don't see that guy is you , the individual. the school is the government and every right they take away from an already tiny individual dis-empowers the individual rights we have to freedom and empowers the government for tyranny like this and a death panel that will condemn you with Obamacare
you are a collectivist. either you are for individuality or collectivism you cannot be for both. there is a power struggle. the individual is already small and needs the constitution to protect his rights from government . you empower the government vs the individual.
isn't the government already too big , too powerful? Yes . and I know MOST Americans agree with me . you seem not to think so and don't see the threat government poses to our rights and freedom. you just think you will never be on the receiving end of some oppression or injustice from government or some government bureaucrat. but as you help empower government you will be , we all are suffering now even if just the opportunity that a truly free market would give us to buy things and live our lives as we truly want to.
it's ridiculous . you people empower government . and you somehow think that it is you who will somehow control this behemoth or that it will act perfectly as you wish it to. laughable , government is corruption , unaccountability, inefficiency and evil .
but you all seek to keep empower this monstrosity . good luck with that when some gov bureaucrat decides you don't need any more meds in Obamacare: you helped empower that your eventual death at the hands of these socialist power mad hungry morons who will decide it is time for you not to get life saving medical treatment .you are a democrat
Will someone PM me the graphic parts this book is in trouble over?
I guess because I was not schooled in a government school, I am better for it. Obviously you were part of the pig trouph and were educated in a government school. I went to Catholic School, my parents went to Catholic School and my kids definitely go to Catholic School. Just went to Holy Communion for one of my kids on Saturday. I really don’t give a care what happens at the Public School. It makes no mind to me. I think the dude was a big mouth and was glad to be rid of him. I am not a Democrat because they are similar to you......attend the public school. No thanks. Again, I don’t give a care what happens in a public school. If parents really cared, they would send the kids to a place where the Bible is allowed, prayers are allowed, books are decent, but you guys love to complain which is what you all are good at....sending your kids to non public school....not so much.
Good Lord. How many more warning did this idiot need. The woman said “wait your turn 100 times”. Again, I really don’t care and find it hilarious that you guys do. I am glad to see this crap going on. the other day it was complaining that a kid couldn’t read the bible. What will it be that you guys complain about tomorrow? Again it makes no difference to me.....no public schools in 3 generations in this family. Perhaps you should follow suit or do you like the complaining better?
Being respectful is the kinda crap that has got this Country in the position we are in.
It’s way past time to be DISrespectful, and make some mischief
Fair enough, but you suffer the consequences of your action. The OWS person got 7 years today. I supposed that was celebrated on here. I haven’t checked but would imagine. she suffered the consequences of her action. Both should and both are at this time. Good to see fairness all around.
Why oh why do people still hand their children over to these governmental educational centers?
I just have to say ...
After feeling depressed by this, I realized that it made my day. My homeschooling friends and I are stressing about high school questions like which is the best Latin curriculum, which history cycles to use, how to fit in most of the great books of Western civilization in so little time, the pros and cons of persuasive writing courses, and how to get ready for dual enrollment for college science classes. We have almost-ninth graders.
I was really worried about those things. I felt like a failure this week for not having all the answers. As for what we’re reading — My 7th grader finished an essay on The Bronze Bow, my 8th grader just finished Pride and Prejudice and gave an oral synopsis to her lit. group, and our friends are getting through the end of Veritas’ Omnibus I and are reading Plutarch’s Lives.
When I’m riddled with guilt and stress (brought on by meeting older relatives at Easter who think public school is not to be missed), here are 9th graders in public school reading absolute crap and the school board wasting time on it.
Talk about a self-esteem booster.
.I understand government is more of a problem than some individual that the government says is a problem
I understand government is more of a problem any real problem caused by the government
I understand government is more of a problem than any real problem
you don't , you buy the news media lies that government is needed to save you from all these fake threats when the thing you should be worried about is the proposed cure = government
You want more government intervention then I want. You want the government to take care of the mean ole schools having a book you don’t like. I could care less and by pass the nonsense by being a great parent. Try it.
Again I don’t care about public schools. I laugh at this type of story because it is stupid for you to send your kids to government schools in the first place. This is what you get. I am not going to support any of it.
