Authorities are searching for an aggressive mountain lion that killed a German shepherd in a Fontana backyard Wednesday and kept returning to the home despite being shot at by police.
About 3:30 a.m. a resident in the 4100 block of Fox Borough Drive heard his dog crying out and went outside to find a large mountain lion standing over his dead 100-pound German shepherd, the Fontana police said in a statement.

LOL!
A dog on hair-trigger, ready to repel attacks by large mountain lions, is NOT a house dog!
I have a field-type Labrador Retriever that is death on anything with feathers - a big, wide-ranging, aggressive bird dog. She is totally inappropriate for a house pet - the hunt test judges have nicknamed her "Psycho" and "Cujo." Her hunting instincts are always "ON" and she would be in the pound in about 30 seconds if not in a hunting household.
But she would be NO match for a big cat. None at all.
The key word there is “two.”
.
It’s like the hound and the jack rabbit.
The rabbit is way faster than the hound, but foolishly keeps changing directions until he runs out of gas, and then...
.
A cat of equal weight would prolly dominate in every category.”
Not comparing the mountain lion versus GSD pound for pound.
A healthy mountain lion would not take on a healthy and alert GSD. That cat would know one injury could cause its death. That's why they will go after deer, squirrels, etc.
Even if the mountain lion decided to do that, any prolonged fight would favor the GSD as it has higher fat reserve; the cat would tire quickly. That's why cats are ambush predators and wild dogs are pack hunters.
I’ve seen one keep a cougar at bay til the hunters got there, but for a really good successful fight, two is key, you are indeed correct.
On another note, Salamander asked about the ridgeback. Those dogs would face a cougar alone, and I have no doubt come out on top.
It doesnt appear the large cat was struck by any of the bullets, authorities said. The home where it killed the dog was in the Hunters Ridge neighborhood of Fontana.
Pretty bad shooting in my opinion.
The key to any canine gaining victory over a cat is not cornering the cat. Keeping them running and tiring them out is what is needed. Cats are not long-winded.
Pretty bad shooting in my opinion.”
They missed but according to other reports the cat and/or LEOs might have been moving and they may have had only handguns at that time.
Cops can’t hit moving targets?
Sasquatch/Bigfoot does not exist, but it is protected in 20 states!
“Cops cant hit moving targets?”
Most people can’t hit targets under stress if both target and shooter are moving.
What do they do with a moving felon?
They were used to shooting a family dog that is standing still and waging it’s tail.
Yep.
;)
My AmStaff has worn down every GSD and malinois he’s every wrestled with. He’s too fast, too athletic and too squirrely for them to keep up. He gets bulldozed at first but GSDs just don’t have the stamina.
This is playtime. :)
Stunning!
:)
Thank you! He’s got a grip on Joey’s face with his teeth.
