"We gave an oath to the state of Ukraine, not an oath to one particular general, and certainly not one from another country," Major Rostislav Lomtev told the Guardian from inside the base.
The Russians duly disappeared. But not for long. They would be back later. The resolution to this standoff remains precariously inconclusive...
The troops may not wear insignia on their uniforms, but they arrived in trucks with Russian military plates and are well armed. Privately, the commanders admitted to Ukrainian troops that they were Russian regular troops. Given that some of them were personally acquainted, there was not much point in hiding it.
As Major Lomtev in Feodosia put it: "We know a lot of them, because we have done a lot of joint exercises together and have close links with them. To be honest, I don't think they are very proud of the orders they are carrying out at the moment."

My only question:
When do Jane Fonda and company head off to Kiev?
Putin will reincorporate Crimea into Russia the way China seized Tibet. There is nothing the West can do to prevent it. The transformation may be bloodless unless Putin decides to seize parts of eastern Ukraine.
The best thing the Ukes can do is get a gun and some ammo in the hands of every able-bodied citizen and then wait for the Ruskies to show up.
Might suggest to the the Uke parliament to pass a 2nd Amendment resolution real fast.
While the Ukraine is being overrun mac daddy is busy drawing red lines and Putin is ROTFLHAO.
Mac daddy has NO credibilty anywhere in the world, NONE.
What an embarrassment he is for America in the eyes of the world.
The citizenry already demands it...
Anyone know if this turned out to be true?
Ultranationalist Ukrainian political party leaders banned from U.S.
Eastern Ukraine is the bread basket of both it and the former USSR. Were I he, that is what I would want. Once in firm control over both fuels to Europe and food stuffs that are exported, he has both feet on Europes throat. Europe will do nothing and the US under Obama is impotent militarily to force Putin to do otherwise. Meanwhile, the press is already making a play that his excellency intends to squeeze Russia financially. What a joke, the largest debtor country in the world is going to financially squeeze one that is solvent! Keep dreaming NBC.
I think you mean Lviv, in the far west
But it doesnt look like a statement theyd make... hacked perhaps
What WAS needed was an effective US detterent, long frittered away by this vile administration

Here, city of Lvov disavows nationalist Svoboda, recent anti-Russian sentiment and pledges a day of speaking Russian.
I heard an interesting take: as long as there are border “disputes”, there won’t be any acceptance into NATO.
Putin may be happy to simply preclude Ukraine from joining the West’s institutions by keeping things in flux.
Putin’s actions use the same logic of protecting Russian speakers as Hilter’s did to justify invading Austria and Czechoslovakia.
The West’s response is similar also. We have his word...or will shortly.
Peace in our time.
What do you mean, ineffective?
Obama defriended Putin on facebook. Putin has to come around now.
All true...
