Walmart Revolutionizes Its Fleet With This New Design
Live Trucking.com ^ | 2/20/14

Walmart recently unveiled their new concept big rig, called the WAVE.

Short for Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience, it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the road.

Not only does it have a radical new appearance, but many of the internal features are also unprecedented.

The steering wheel is positioned directly in the center of the cab, with a completely digital dashboard displayed on monitors on either side of the wheel.

On the outside, the trailer is made of carbon fiber and sheds 4,000 pounds off the weight of traditional semi trucks, allowing it to haul more goods.

The aerodynamic design and hybrid engine were created for maximum efficiency.

With 7,000 trucks and one of the largest fleets in the country, if these new efficient trucks are a success it can lead to many other businesses picking up similar vehicles.

What do you think of this new truck? Like it? Love it? Hate it?. Let us know.

Either way, it’s going to take some time to get used to.

Video at link. An automatic trans on a semi? GMC has experimented with this on and off since the 50's. But the steering wheel in the center of the cab, especially in a semi doesn't seem too safe. I guess it'll cut down on the cost of manufacturing and assembly if they send some of these trucks to the UK or Australia.

with all the money walmart has why don’t they just go for a truck that drives itself hell they could have a whole fleet that could make the run from china to their shelves autonomously

There’s no question that Wal-mart will probably commercialize the concept. If they can increase a load carried by 3 tons, or more, there would be an strong interest in the design.

What does Wallmart offer that a local craftsman can’t provide?

Most vehicles today have rear facing camera's either in the console or guidelines in the rear-view mirror's. What makes you think these wont? That seems safer to me vice guessing on mirrors. Besides, the big cement trucks around here have been doing center drive columns for years now and those guys REALLY know how to get around town let alone "off road" to deliver the cement

Paper products, electronics, toiletries............I could keep going, but I think you get the idea.

I do most of my shopping at local owned small businesses, but there are some things for which a major retailer is necessary.

If everybody stopped shopping at Wal-mart and caused it to go out of business, where would you suggest the unskilled go look for work?

Walmart was playing around with diesel-electric drive at one point (2009 or so). That must not have panned out.

They would join the “Free Agent” ranks not constrained to a dead end job but completely free to follow their derams just like the hero in the story “Derams Of My Father” (not a typo)

I have invested in Capstone Turbine stock. They are the company which makes the engine for this truck. Their stock is up 17% in the last year. This is NOT a recommendation to buy.

At the over priced union stores that refuse to sell guns.
