A man in Kansas lost all his feet toes after walking for an hour in the snow wearing only dress shoes. As I read the article (link), I wondered how many people could have easily been caught in the same situation. Some people do keep an emergency kit of some sort in their cars. Usually this is some kind of basic car breakdown kit or of bug out bag.

Chances are you won’t need it but when you do....
I used to hike a bit and I always carried ample supplies. It was more weight but the couple of times I needed it turned the hike from a miserable experience to a very pleasant one.
If it’s really cold, add insulated coveralls and a stocking cap to your sleeping bag etc. Also a large metal can and slow burning candles.
There is no town named Plattsburg in Kansas. If the man is actually from Plattsburg, he is from Missouri, not Kansas. WGU University is located there, but that is an online university. He was probably referred to University of Kansas Hospital for specialized care. (Or he was a student who came home to his parent’s house in Kansas which would make him “from Kansas,” and KU Hospital a nearby hospital.)

I do know of someone with that last name at Church here in Kansas, but he is much older. Hope it is not his son attending college in Missouri. I was going to say that KU in Lawrence is a party town, but what was the young man doing in Plattsburg? I wish him well.
