Yes, I see the same. Its a kind of cognitive dissonance. They know the Soviet era was bad, if not downright evil. It wasn't high-minded virtue gone wrong through extremism either - it was a corrupt, stupid, dreary and miserable system as well. Yet, admitting it publicly is difficult, because they have almost nothing else in terms of history or culture that was not poisoned by communism - history, religion, culture - all were transformed.
Its like children who were abused badly by their father, yet still choose to defend him and remember only those few good points.

I tend to believe Putin on that point.....someones really trying to make this event look terrible...but even some of the journalists are posting the acomodations aren’t as bad as being reported.....in fact much in the rooms are very high-tech.

I think it’s kewel but, wholly unworthy of applaud.
While the intent is to show Kommunism rising, to right thinking people, it demonstrates a failed ideology dissappearing into and under the ocean, which serves to extinguish its embers...
And employees.
Understood....but I think also it’s very difficult for Russians to slam Putin too much...he has done far better for the country than previously and they know it.
Putin is still out for power etc. and we know this as they do...but it still will always boil down to if the people see their life improve or not...and for many Russians it has.
Kinda like having pride in Pinochet.
He may very well be an unholy bass terd but, he’s our unholy bass terd.

Thanks for pointing that out. It's not like those for whom the applause is supposedly meant can actually hear it.
It's almost as annoying as event hosts or reporters at an event who applaud right next to their microphone.
