I took the photos of my computer screen with my camera.

You're already kind of messing up right there.
If right clicking on an image does not give you the option to save it
then "PrtScn" (upper right) will copy the image and then you may
paste the image elsewhere. Even Word. Better though would be to
paste it into an image-handling program, like Paint or Adobe or whatever you have on your machine.

Then "save as" the result and you have it, an original.. or pretty close.

Why was I stuck in an infinite loop on one session of Word

Probably because you jammed a bunch of images into it and it freaked out.
It's for text.

You can tease it into handling images but it's like using a bathtub for a boat.

I’ve had Word files that had a LOT more graphics than that. 120 MG worth, with no problem. And even when the computer has crashed I don’t remember it ever sending me into an infinite loop like that.

I’ve learned that it’s always best to have hard physical backup that the NSA goons can’t get. Anything on a computer belongs to the government at this point.

Seems like your explanation is “sh!t happens”. Thanks for the “expertise”.
