We no loner live in times that allow us to shrug our our shoulders and say, "Naah. That could never happen here". We now live in times that force us say "I sure hope that ain't true".
I hate to sound like an alarmist, but ladies and gentlemen, the situation is dire. There's no nice way to put this. The Federal Leviathan is now targeting political dissenters with Stasi-like tactics. Case and point:
***
"Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) proposed using the Internal Revenue Service to curtail Tea Party group funding during a speech on how to 'exploit' and 'weaken' the movement at the [$oros funded] Center for American Progress on Thursday.
Arguing that Tea Party groups have a financial advantage after the Supreme Courts 2010 Citizens United decision, Schumer said the Obama administration should bypass Congress and institute new campaign finance rules through the IRS.
'It is clear that we will not pass anything legislatively as long as the House of Representatives is in Republican control, but there are many things that can be done administratively by the IRS and other government agencieswe must redouble those efforts immediately,' Schumer said."

Then, there's HR 3878 that, if passed, will be used to classify unapproved political speech as "hate speech":
***
"Hate Crime Reporting Act of 2014 - Directs the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to update a report for Congress concerning the role of telecommunications in the commission of hate crimes.
Requires such report to include: (1) an analysis of the use of telecommunications (including the Internet, broadcast television and radio, cable television, public access television, commercial mobile services, and other electronic media) to advocate and encourage violent acts and the commission of hate crimes as specified in the Hate Crime Statistics Act; (2) NTIA recommendations; and (3) updates concerning the role of telecommunications in crimes of hate and violent acts against ethnic, religious, and racial minorities."

In other words, the government will decide you're a dangerous hatemonger if you have the Spauldings to write a blog against homosexual "marriage", allowing illegal aliens to invade our country, or dare to criticize a liberal who happens to be a minority. (Of course, if you throw some venom at a minority that has the nerve to believe in the Constitution, you'll get the Presidential Medal of Freedom.)
There's no longer an attempt to even remotely hide the Authoritarian Left's desire to silence dissent.
Isn't that right, Governor Cuomo?
***
"Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right to life, pro assault weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that's who they are, and if they are the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York because that's not who New Yorkers are. If they're moderate Republicans, like in the Senate right now, who control the Senate -- moderate Republicans have a place in this state."

And there's countless other instances how bad things have gotten, ranging from the DHS report that was accidentally leaked to the press in 2009 to the Southern Poverty Law Center attempting to sic law enforcement on Conservatives such as Pamela Geller and Tony Perkins in the name of "tolerance".
Even West Point has started to call Conservatives enemies of the state:
***
"A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about 'far right' groups such as the 'anti-federalist' movement, which supports 'civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.' The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled 'Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding Americas Violent Far-Right.' The center part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army officers posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government activists with three movements it identifies as 'a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist movement.'

Folks, It doesn't get more serious than this. Add all of the above to the NSA spying on us and Chairman Obama constantly threatening to act without CONgress and We the People have a serious problem, and not one that can be solved with cut 'n paste solutions like "we need to elect more Republicans". The nudging of partisan politics has been replaced by authoritarian shoving. We're on the edge of political, economic, and social disaster.
God help us all.
Why we must speak even louder.
Agreed. But unfortunately, the Republican party can’t be counted on to speak for us anymore. We have to do it ourselves.
Ping!
“All hail the American night!
What was that?
I don’t know
Sounds like guns...thunder.”
:)
“What you said” bump.
Thanks! Long time, no “see” !! :)
Liberty is a package. You cannot let religious liberty wane and not expect that to affect all liberty. It’s the same with gun rights, etc.
We need a broad coalition to shrink the cost and reach of government. It will take conservatives, moderates, liberals and libertarians all together to get this done. We need to find areas of agreement and create winning coalitions with 65%+ Likely Voter support.
That’s the only way back. Well, it’s not the only way, but the other way is a bloody mess and horror.
Obama could tear up the Constitution an declare himself dictator and the GOP leadership would just whimper but the media would hail his boldness and the Democrats would applaud.
They’ll have to pry my keyboard from my cold dead fingers.
No arguments here.
The problem is the Powers that Be (the crony capitalists, the unchecked federal bureaucracy, the media that roots for them, et al) will never allow that happen. Like Senator Palpatine told Anakin Skywalker, the thing that the powerful most fear is losing their power.
Moderates and liberals have already chosen their side. Its up to conservatives and libertarians.
I’m not a fan of the complete libertarian package but I’ll take it over what the Republicrats are offering.
Sadly, you’re right. This is more than cheering for the guys who have the same logo on their caps.
Give leftists an inch and they will go for the jugular.
You got that right, Boss.
I’ll continue to write my barely literate column no matter what. I’ll post it to a tree if I have to. Heck, I’ll even write it when they’re tattooing numbers on my arm.
I will NOT give in. Not now. Not ever.
I feel the same way about libertarians, but I don’t there’s a choice.
“Give leftists an inch and they will go for the jugular.”
And rip it out with their teeth. They’re animals.
Bump, dittoes, etc. to ALL you wrote! There are still too many that have not one clue as to how dire a situation we’re in. I encounter them too many time to count. Some are trying to just keep their heads above water and some just flat out don’t care.
I do what I can to educate them but if they don’t listen then what?
Was encouraged to hear that the AZGOP voted to censure McCain. Probably just symbolic but noteworthy anyway. Maybe there are a few republicans who still believe in this country as the founders envisioned it.
Always a treat to read one of your threads.
BTW I don’t want my comment to be misconstrued as meaning that I don’t work to pull liberal voters to the right.
Liberal voters are awfully unhappy with Obama and the democrats. The Chamber of Commerce attack on the tea party has given us a great opportunity to show liberal relatives that the tea party is serious about expanding economic opportunity for all and leveling the playing field.
