You might remember that Angela Corey cancelled an already impanelled Grand Jury and held a press conference to announce she was proceeding with the Second Degree murder charge on her own auspices. The artwork’s inspiration may have come from this photograph/

Hate to say it, but he’s going to get sued for painting from that photograph. “Intellectual property” that is.

That sounds like BS. Artists sketch works of art in museums all the time. I’m sure many of these works are on loan from private collectors. Never heard of a copyright issue.

If not, then George could be setting himself up for trouble.

You betcha! In this country they throw you in prison for making a Youtube video.

NOT. It’s not an exact replica. That’s the difference. It’s similar, so no copyright law was broken.

I yell back at my TV a lot but it’s usually just ranting to drown out the audio. When I watched that Corey news conference I was frozen between the urge to vomit and the desire to smash the TV. I still can’t find adequate adjectives to describe how atrocious she was.

And it could be considered a parody, which is protected.

Yes, you can sketch the works of other artists, but when you try to sell them, that's an entirely different issue. Of course, when enough time has passed, some artwork becomes public domain, but then there's the problem of artistic integrity. If you painted your own Mona Lisa, then you're just a hack or a forger.

No, you're wrong on this. You can sketch and paint anything you want, but the problem comes down to when you try and sell the image. George needed PERMISSION from that photographer to recreate that image, especially since he's selling it. I'm with George about the shooting, but here he is wrong to do this.

I think you're stretching it by calling it a parody. If he had made her cross-eyed with flies swirling around her head, then you'd have something, but no... even Weird Al' had some issues with making parodies of songs; and he had permission from the record label!

If you want an example of what I’m talking about, take Shepard Fairey, the dink-wad artist who did the “Hope” poster for Obama, was sued by Manny Garcia, who took the photo that Shepard copied. Then, little dink-wad artist turned around and tried to sue other artists for aping HIS picture (and THEY were parodies). So, yes, George can get in trouble for this if the photographer is so inclined to press the issue.
