You said exactly what I said in a different way. To last, the music has to cross generational lines. I agree on the Stones. But who DOESN'T know "Satisfaction" or "Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Sympathy For the Devil"?

Heck, even some holier-than-thou Freepers who claim not to listen to rock can quote those lyrics.

I agree. You know, I do have Sinatra and Martin on my iPod, but I do have GaGa as well as Weird Al's take offs on her. Brubeck shares space with Sabbath, KC & Sunshine Band, Leslie Gore, DJ Mouse, Wolfmother, etc.

One of the best places to hear new, or much different covers, is the soundtrack from "Sons of Anarchy." They have a Mexican version of Dylan's "Times TheyAre a' Changin'"

Back in the early 70s we had a local radio station that played a lot of good “hippie” music. Then they changed their format. I has hearing what I thought of as the worst song ever produced – Melanie’s “Brand New Key” at least twice an hour. I quit listening as did many others. They sold out a few months later to a new owner and new format.

I joked to my guests" imagine if the Beatles were part of the Millenial generation. John Lennon would be lip synching an aerobic dance with George , Ringo and Paul would dance in unison behind him. What gives Millenials? have you no sense ? don't you realize that these "performers" are manufactured pretty boys/girls ? they are live action "Archies" If your taste in music is so vacuous , is there any hope for them? Is there any hope to wan them from Obama?

Back in the 50s, "singers" would make "public appearances" where they lip synched to their records as well.

Most music these days is absolute trash, unfortunately.

I disliked the "radio bands" pretty much my whole life.

Disco? You people think disco acts weren't manufactured and using studio gimmicks (and piles of co-co-co-caine to fuel the frenzies response)?

I remember when "Disco sucks" was a common expression. But much of that was intricate, clever, and was performed well. If you wanted to dance, it was good stuff.

It even had strings and violins! Nothing says dance music like a string section.

Iron Maiden didn’t get much radio or tv play in the 80s or 90s either (even though they could pack a basketball arena tour).

Just because something is happening “out of the mainstream” doesn’t mean that the listeners aren’t part of some other mainstream (untracked/unreported) activity.

There is always good and bad music coming out of each generation. What was said about Elvis back in his early days was pretty much of the same tone as we see with just about any new stuff.

My music catalog spans from the 30's to today. There is good and bad stuff to be found just about any year you look at. I sometimes think it's strange to think that I have MP3s of music that was essentially recorded by someone "singing into a can".

The lack of dynamics is the result of the loudness war. The theory is louder is percieved as better so Compressors squash everything for max loudness. It’s mixed mastered and recompressed for radio.

All our amps are better because they go to 11, see.
