That’s a lost art. It hasn’t been taught at Annapolis in about 20 years. (They needed more time for White Oppression Studies.)
I know how to sail....on a lake. I own a 20 ft C-Scow......I have no idea how to sail the ocean.
Thanks!!
I can't believe that somebody besides me wrote that line. But you get it. I will get a few emails next year from new sailors and it will be well worth it.
It's all about freedom.
I finally have read “Enemies Foreign and Domestic”.
You are a very talented writer, and the story gave me a lot to ponder.
I also read the excerpts from the other two books.
Rarely have I encountered characters in literature that cared about as deeply as those in your books.
May you always have a fair wind and following seas, MB.
That’s what I’ve heard.
Apparently the USN considers the GPS constellation to be invulnerable.
I hope they’re right.
Even if they are, your own receiver is not invulnerable.
I should have added “a set of sight-reduction tables” to my earlier list.
You are welcome, it was my pleasure.
****Whoever asks to see your passport will also be asking if you have any guns on board.****
Good point. I suppose the saying “naked as the sea” is apropos.
It depends on how often you seek out the customs people to present them. They don’t “ask,” they don’t know you are within a thousand miles until you walk up to some office in a city and tell them.
Works for me. I said only 3% would appreciate this.
Listen, powerboats are GREAT escape pods, they just are not going to cross oceans the wide way. Diesels are best, fuel lasts longer. A seaworthy powerboat with a 200 mile range can make South America island hopping. Of course, that assumes that fuel is for sale and you have the cash etc. But you could drive a Bertram to Rio.
For most. I was hitchhiking interstate in high school.
Yes, bless his soul, he left a fabulous escape pod. Forget speed and talk about cargo capacity. Or passengers. That Morgan could carry a platoon or whatnot. Lots of family, escaping. That is a good quality. Speed? Who cares? That is a tortoise talking smack with a turtle.
Don’t know channel 33, I found Ian and the boys by accident a while ago. I seeded Echo refs through Castigo Cay, and through this essay.
Yes, even when you have to seek out the police and/or customs to report that you have landed. Otherwise, you could just stay for weeks unnoticed. Yes. It’s a very different world traveling by sailboat. No TSA corrals.
To those posters who are wishing and waiting for their retirements to live the cruising dream, try taking your retirement now - while you are healthy and strong. You will not need as many ‘amenities’ on board your chosen vessel - items that tend to break down and cause excessive time in ports waiting for parts or mechanics.
You can go with a smaller, more basic boat. you will not rely on crew, as many older ‘retired’ couples have to do.
Children will get more education from a year at sea than any year they spend in a classroom.

When did you redo the Thompson 260? You would love my novel Castigo Cay. A 25’ Pantera with a Chevy big block is a key “character.”
I love all boats. This essay is focused on “escape pod” aspects (sailboats and houseboats) but damn it, I am just a boat nut.
Thanks. I will grant special dispensation for considerations rendered.
Just wait until the Democrats pass the Affordable Boat Act. You may qualify for a subsidy.
I read about it on the internet a few days ago, but don't remember the link.
Yes, that’s my trusty old Sailomat wind vane, sailed my 48’ 36,000# cutter from gales to ghosters. Now I have an inside autopilot, remains to be tested on the ocean. But my stern is now clear for dinghy ops etc.
It would be perfect if he was made a permanent resident at Camp David. The Marines would be happy to keep him safe.
