I just replaced the cabin sole on my Gulfstar. Pulled out the old and cut new out of teak & holly ply. Took me forever. Came out really nice. I replace all the thru hulls and seacocks last year and glassed over a bunch of unused ones.
Back later.
Sounds like a sea story to me, but I like it!
Interesting.
“I am far more worried about pirates, especially on the Intercoastal Waterway, if things go badly.”
Very interesting! When you think about it, riverine piracy sounds simple; no need to search for plunder, it comes to you. Think about it some more, and those branches & inlets make ideal pirate lairs.
The mighty Mississippi must have a history of piracy, especially near the delta. Will have to learn more.
Ping. Have y’all met?
Whoever asks to see your passport will also be asking if you have any guns on board.
You know, it does sound like a sea story.
But the first time, of several, I heard him tell it was during the Summer and sitting at the outside patio bar at Sequoia on the Georgetown (DC) waterfront.
Us younger guys were marvelling at the boats pilling up with girl/guy ratios in the four or five to one range.
And the women on those boats were decidedly better looking, and less clothed, than the ones at the bar. And it being Sequoia in the Summertime that’s saying a lot!
There’s something about hot women and guys with boats ...
Bookmark bump.
Nice. It never ends.
40 years ago I was building roads and airports through the bush in the Virgins. At night I was drinking Heinekens at the Quaterdeck or bars like it depending on which island I was on. It was there that I met a marine biologist from the University who taught me how to dive. Never did sail much and at my age my back isn’t what it used to be so I won’t be sailing off into the sunset but I did enjoy your essay. Brought back memories of my misspent youth. :-}
There’s that ‘Newport Green’ again. At one time it was a popular color for non slip areas. Our 40 ft Yorktown was done in it. When it started looking ragged I repainted in a nice silver gray. So much better.
If I had the cash for a big boat, I think I’d go with something bigger than 30 feet. heh. Something big enough to keep me from getting seasick. lol
The c-head? All the live aboards around me thought I was crazy. Now they are thinking about switching out.
I didn’t post the 30 ft, our boat is a 40. And boy does 10 ft on a boat make a huge difference. We started out looking at 35’s and even they were too small for me. We would go down the stairs and I would immediately say nope, and turn and go right back up to the cockpit.
lol
I think I would be the same way. I am not a boat person, so the smaller boats would probably make me feel like I was bobbing along waiting for a fish to bite and plunge me under.
Our requirement was for two people to be able to stand up below decks and walk around without stepping on each others toes. And for it to be a center cockpit.
Aft cabin center cockpit
That was my requirement too. I don’t care for the center cockpits but Hubby would probably like it better. Better sight line.
