This looks like a number of filters that operate on more or less the same principle. This thirty dollar kit, plus a couple of 5 gallon buckets and a few minutes of assembly time, seems pretty reasonable. Does it sound decent to you?

Mr. GG2 has put together quite a few of these ceramic water filter kits for our family and a couple of friends. They work great. We get ours from Internetprepper.com This is a small business owned by a veteran and a real good guy and their turn around is 3-4 days.
Personally I wouldn’t buy jack from Cheaper than Dirt. They showed their true colors when they pulled assault rifles from their site at the first of gun control after Sandy Hook. Just my personal opinion.

if you are travelling, carry activated charcoal to filter water. it is also good if someone has ingested poison. activated charcoal is cheap at the pet store, or make it yourself
