SEOUL : North Korea publicly executed around 80 people earlier this month, many for watching smuggled South Korean TV shows, a South Korean newspaper reported. The conservative JoongAng Ilbo cited a single, unidentified source, but at least one North Korean defector group said it had heard rumours that lent credibility to the front-page report.
The source, said to be familiar with the Norths internal affairs and recently returned from the country, said the executions were carried out in seven cities on November 3.
In the eastern port of Wonsan, the authorities gathered 10,000 people in a sports stadium to watch the execution of eight people by firing squad, the source quoted one eyewitness as saying.
Most were charged with watching illicit South Korean TV dramas, and some with prostitution.
Several of the cities, including Wonsan and Pyongsong in the west, have been designated as special economic zones aimed at attracting foreign investment to boost the Norths moribund economy.
The Seoul-based news website, Daily NK, which is run by North Korean defectors and has a wide network of sources, said it had no information on the executions.
But another defector-run website, North Korea Intellectual Solidarity, said its sources had reported several months ago on plans for a wave of public executions.

G-FORCE!
which one is kee-op?
There is a group in Washington DC who would want to execute people for watching Fox.
Ah, the parallels democrats have with oppressive governments
They would if they could.
Democide: Socialism, Tyranny, Guns and Freedom
Kick-ass youtube video I wrote and co-produced.
I think Gatchaman was a Japanese anime, not Korean. LOL!
I think Kee-op is the one on the right.
It was Japanese.
As I have said before, South Korea in 2013 is Japan in the 1970s. Their G-Force grouping (five people, five color scheme, helmets similar) is proof that’s where they are.
I see what you are saying.
That stuff was extremely popular then. South Korea has been held back from popular culture for decades and this is where their current level of what is cool to them, is. 1970s type Japan stuff. It’s acceptable because it’s very very tame compared to what current pop culture is now.
It’s kind of the joke about canadians in the 1990s looking like we did in 1983, because the 80s didn’t come to Canada until about 1996.
What year is Alaska living in right now?
Hard to tell.
on the one hand there’s a lot of hardy and rugged people up there.
on the other hand they all get paid to live there and the indians get money for being indians, so they’re no strangers to getting money from uncle sugar.
