It goes back before that, to Joe the Plumber conversation. The prologue to “spread the wealth around” was Joe’s aspiration to open his own business. Paraphrasing Obama from my memory, Obama shaded his answer with a preference for Joe to remain an employee and pay/tax incentive to encourage him to do that. It fit well with Obama’s Marxist preference for mega corporations and unionized work force. “Get these troublesome kulaks out of the way of my plans.”
