Always Fantastic Stuff
Love Lee Ritenour. Phil Upchurch is another great jazz guitarist.
I am honestly ignorant of Phil Upchurch, but will be checking him out immediately... thx!
As a lifelong musician I love an eclectic variety of styles including jazz. Especially guitar jazz like Lee Ritenour. I saw Jon Luc Ponty a couple times back in the 70s when he was touring in SoCal. I also was one of the few here who caught Steely Dan live on the Pretzel Logic tour in Long Beach Cal. Now that was one heck of a great show.
Thanks for posting this.
I had a Dave Grusin/Lee Ritenour album that I plyed the heck out of and then bought the CD. It’s a live one.
We have a very large musical crossover, Bullish
And you’ve been blessed, but it’s the Steely Dan show that’s really got me jealous... fantastic
That’s okay — most people, even jazz enthusiasts, have never heard of him. He’s a fabulous jazz guitarist. Been at it for a very very long time.
You are a man after my Fender-XX-caster heart!
Please, introduce yourself to Condor51, another ‘Caster loving fool.
So...looks like he is choking a Gibson? culpa...mea!
Them two had what you call ‘synergy’, it really did work well
Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, and Robben Ford were the mainstays of L.A. studio guitar in the 70’s and early 80’s - all tremendous players and all still active (primarily their own material).
The very first time I ever heard “Rikki don’t lose that number” it was live in concert. Loved it and still do. They were amazing. Steely Dan is one band that can play their music live and sound exactly like the studio recording.... only louder and better. The year was either ‘73 or ‘74.
Good times!
They are truly stupendous, I am awed by The Dan!
I did this post two years back, has a couple GREAT videos of them live more recently, ‘Deacon Blues’ and ‘Black Cow’:

I am familiar with Larry Carlton, I need to check out Ford
That’s some handle you’ve got... how appropriate!
Lee Ritenour’s first paid session in the studio was with the Mamas and Papas when he was just 16!
This is good too: Room 335
This interview /documentary in a mixing room is real, real amusing... I just found and watched it:
