BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Children with weakened immune systems are not the only targets infected by flu, a new study shows.
The study says even a quarter of healthy children have the chance to be killed by this illness.
The findings, from researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emphasize the importance of everyone who is eligible getting vaccinated against flu.
"Many people don't recognize that a healthy child could be at risk for these severe complications," Dr. Karen Wong, the study's lead author, said.
"Every child may be at risk and every child six months and older should get a flu shot this time of year," she added. Wong is a medical officer at the CDC in Atlanta.
CDC started to track flu-related death among kids eight years ago. "We saw newborns and teenagers," Wong said. "So any age can really be at risk."
In the study, a total of 794 death cases were under examination in which 33 percent had diseases affecting the nervous system and 12 percent had genetic or chromosomal conditions, a reason why they are more vulnerable to illness.
Another 43 percent, however, had no chronic medical conditions that would put them at high risk for complications.

"...a new study shows"
Usually it's a new British study or British scientists have shown.....
Whenever I see those words, I know that B.S. is sure to follow. Lol.
What an innocuous statement as well. Flu, rather, influenza, has been around for THOUSANDS of years. It just had different names. It's a virus, with sniffles, runny nose, scratchy throat, all the bells and whistles of the FLU.
See?!
Viruses don't discriminate.
Liberals don't discriminate.
Liberals are viruses!
I know the risk of not taking one, but what about the risk it makes you very, very sick and leaves you almost daily and nightly stuck on the toilet. Ever have both ends going at once, better have a trash can in the bath room.
Last Christmas was Okay but the 2 consecutive ones before that I came down sick with stomach flu. Not the run of the mill kind either. I literally went to the bathroom and fell to the floor feeling like death. Some kind of odd electricity type feeling going through me body. Had to go to hospital to get IV and anti-nausea drug to stop the vomiting. The drug, which had worked in the past, did not these times. I was puking AND ahem* had it coming out the other end in the hospital hallway getting to my car after they released me those 2 Christmas nights. I have been sick many Christmas days, usually with the regular flu. But since the stomach flu is soooo horrible for me I’ve taken to staying away from family and friends at the holiday now.
Usually there is just the injection site sting and reddening of the skin, this time it welted, stung, and by the time I got home I was sick as a dog, I too ended up in the ER, only I was forced to stay the night for observation, which meant IV and all that other crap that goes with it. Missed my morning and afternoon meds, as those are brand names, and hospitals now only carry generics. And for those 2 I have to have the name brand or I get really, really sick on the generics.
We stay away from large crowds during flu season too.
I can count the number of times I’ve had the flu on 1 hand in 65 years. Never had any problems until I started getting the flu shots.
And for heaven’s sake if you go to a doctor’s office do not pick up any of those germ ridden magazines that are years out of date, or web MD, that offer bad advice. The germs last about 12 hrs on them.
If you are sneezing or coughing WEAR A MASK! don’t spread your germs. Ditto goes for body soaps, perfumes, and colognes, don’t take a bath in them, there are to many of us allergic to just the smell of those strong suckers. And you used to much when I can smell you 6 feet away.
