If he’s like our dogs back in the day, he did know and generally stay on his property. But sometimes he’d be up for an adventure, chase a scent or whatever, or even maybe want to go visit with a friendly neighbor.

Why wasn’t the dog already trained to stay on the property (300 acres)?
After observing outdoor dogs and cats for years, I have come to the conclusion that they have their own set of property records, which generally do NOT correspond with the human set. IT may big larger or smaller, but there are definite areas that are "theirs", and dogs with dogs, cats with cats, understand where these lines are, even if they fight over them.
