(TheBlaze/AP) — Major problems were reported Saturday all across America with the Electronic Benefits Transfer System, as consumers were stuck with no way to pay at registers, notes WBZ-TV in Boston.

WBZ reported that a computer-system upgrade was to blame, while the Associated Press reports that a routine check by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure.

People in Ohio, Michigan and several other states found themselves unable to use their food stamp debit cards while shoppers from Maine to Oklahoma had to abandon baskets of groceries because they couldn’t access their benefits.

I remember seeing this back in the 1980’s as an ad for a computer video game: “88 Magnum, it shoots through schools!” B-)

I don’t recall hearing of the last upgrade that interrupted the system, anyone know when that was?

“...the system is now up and running, beneficiaries in the 17 affected states continue to experience connectivity issues to access their benefits. This disruption impacts EBT beneficiaries who rely on the system for SNAP and WIC. Technical staff is addressing the issue and expect the system to be restored soon. Beneficiaries requiring access to their benefits can work with their local retailers who can activate an emergency voucher system where available. “

Fun while it lasted.

Maybe they should turn the EBT system off every week or so...then people with cash can shop in peace.

“...shoppers from Maine to Oklahoma had to abandon baskets of groceries...’

Shoppers abandoned their baskets of groceries. They didn’t HAVE to. They could have returned the groceries to the shelves/refrigerators/freezers. Instead, they just abandoned them for store employees to have to put back the groceries where they belong.

Yes, I read this article as well. I am grateful it appears to be being resolved.

However, my knowledge of computer systems is that this sort of system is very likely not centralized, but is spread out in nodes of operability. That means someone shut the system off.

On purpose.

Period.

That tells us the system CAN be shut off. That says a lot, and prior to today, I didn't know for certain it could be.

nodes of operability

There is an operation for that under ObamaCare.

Upgrades can degrade systems, but it is my belief, from years in the computer field, that such a large system would be decentralized. If it is, they have a way of shutting it off anyways. That is important knowledge.

“And, the chocolate rations have been increased to 20 grams!!!!”

“1984”. And, this is the truth, the National Cancer Institute has just changed the definition of cancer so the number having cancer will go down. From now on, you only have cancer if not treating it now will kill you for sure.

All other cancers: “Slower growing tumors would be called a different name such as “indolent lesions of epithelial origin” (IDLE).”

In other words, you will not get treated for cancer until you are for sure going to die if they don’t treat you now.

That is absolutely “1984” wording - don’t tell the people the truth so you can make the numbers say anything you want them to say. “And, chocolate rations have been increased to 25 grams!!”
