Yesterday as I was doing some work and surfing Free Republic, I got a knock on the door. I never answer the door when home alone and didn't yesterday.
I didn't think much of it initially as we get a lot of solicitors, Jehovah Witnesses, etc.
The individual kept knocking rather aggressively and ringing the bell. I looked out a side window and saw a car. Because there can sometimes be lawsuits at my husband's company, my immediate thought was that perhaps he was receiving a summons for a court case that needed his testimony. While this has never happened before I know it is a possibility.
So, while unnerved, I just thought it was an overly aggressive summons server. I was getting a little rattled but no much. I live in a very nice, quite area which is predominately Mormon. I generally feel pretty safe here. Especially at 10:30 am.
I was home with my teenage daughter at the time. Normally, my husband works from home, right near the front door with a firearm.
My daughter and I went to look at the car again when we heard an enormous bang--sounded like the whole front of the house caved in.
We locked ourselves in the front room, locked the door and jumped out the front window. We ran down the street and called 9.11. About ten minutes later we could see four young, hispanic(ish) youths making out the door with our computers, etc.
9.11 actually put me on hold for three minutes or so. They were able to catch them though before they made it out of our subdivision because they got lost.
The officer that came by today said it was purely random. They tried a house around the corner and the door didn't give as easily so they moved on.
We were extremely lucky in that we made it out of the house. I was extremely stupid for not assuming the worst and getting to a firearm, at least, and not calling 9/11 the minute any radar went off.
The officers said this is a common tactic and sometimes if you answer they will make up a story and go away. Sometimes they will force their way in.
Just thought I would share this with Freepers, especially you women who might find yourselves at home alone. Be armed, be prepared and be vigilant. Our society is falling apart.
welcome to third world America
Glad you all are okay.
This is right up your alley. As much as I know what is happening—and read your stuff—still not 100% prepared.
Am echoing BeadCounters thought. Glad you had a backup plan.
Please keep a pistol cocked and locked, or a shotgun, or a revolver, (whatever you’re comfortable with), within reach at all times. Hide a gun in every room so you aren’t forced to run.
PS: Glad you’re safe.
I’m glad you and your family were not hurt. And I’m glad the story had a SEMI-happy ending. A happier ending would have been four dead and/or wounded home-invaders.
Three minutes...wow.
Just like the cops always say, “When seconds count we’re minutes away”.
As a cop, let me tell you how lucky you are. If there’s a choice between calling 911 and grabbing a firearm, go for the gun and tell someone else with you to call 911. If for nothing else so the interaction can be recorded over the 911 system through the phone call. Glad you were able to escape. Keeping the door closed and asking who’s there in an authoritative voice might have made them move on. Going forward, maybe stronger doors and a noticeable sticker on the door referencing the owners are not to be trifled with. Nice job, though, given the circumstance.
Would be better to just have a firearm on your person.
Obama ‘dreamers’?
That is pretty scary. We put in a metal door with a reinforced frame several years ago. It at least gives you a couple of minutes to get to your weapon and dial 911.
You are right, it would have been better if you had armed yourself and called 911 sooner, but jumping out the window was still better than an armed confrontation. You did good.
9mm in the bedroom night stand with an extra mag, 38 in the desk drawer, both loaded with the nasty stuff, chambered and ready. Neither gun has a safety. No room for panic
The heavy hardware is in the safe. I do not keep them loaded & chambered like the handguns. But the safe is an electronic keypad that I can open very quickly and there are loaded 30 round magazines for the AR15 sitting next to it.
We live in a small town, most of our residential crime is penny ante car break ins and empty house break ins. If I decide that we have a need for more than the handguns, I will keep the 12 gauge pump out and loaded.
My wife is still getting early practice with the hand guns, but when it comes to the need to take out an intruder, I will bet she’s got bigger stones than he does. /grin
Just got the police report. Two year under 18, two adults. Three extremely hispanic names (not Juan Lopez) and one white-ish sounding name. Not coincidentally, he looked the most white, was the youngest and was the kid they sent to the door.
In addition to guns get a dog or 2 or 3 and teach them to bark like crazy when someone comes around. I have 3 mixbreeds (different combos of Chow/Shepherd/Pitbull/Husky) from the pound and if someone comes around it sounds like I got a whole herd of killers inside.
video cams can do a lot for showing what happened, but can't stop what is happening....
Isn’t illegal immigration just grand? Diversity is our strength, pfffttttt.
