Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland will be taking a defensive driving course and has accepted a one-day suspension from Mayor Annise Parker, stemming from a traffic incident earlier this month.

Soon after he tweeted news of his punishment, a video of accident was also released to the media via email.

The accident happened about 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 4 at the intersection of Clay and Travis, about a block from police headquarters. McClelland hit a man he didn't see crossing the street as he was driving to police headquarters in a city vehicle.

"I am the boss; I should take a bigger discipline. This is why I am accepting my suspension," the official Houston police Twitter page quoted McClelland as saying.

I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for people who just walk out in front of cars...

I’m going to assume you did not watch the video at the link. The taxpayers are going to end up paying big for this blunder. You or I would be lucky not to get charged witg attempted murder.

Chief was headed north in left lane of one-way street and turned left onto another one-way street heading west. Guy who was crossing the street from south to north was an attorney. Believe he broke his arm.

When you drive in downtown Houston you have to keep your eyes peeled for pedestrians and messengers on bicycles. Chief knew better and should have seen the guy crossing as he turned the corner if he was really paying attention. He gave a long explanation on the news and said he had his seat belt fastened, was not texting, talking on the phone or listening to the radio.

Poor Chief - this one day cost him almost $900. /s/

I like the dude who just keeps walking after a brief glance at the body in the street. Nice.

Yep, in my state you might very well be charged for that. Has the chief released his cell phone records? I don’t think most drunk drivers would have hit that guy. The chief had to be doing something else.

Ouch; that’s gotta sting, eh?

Meanwhile, a citizen would have gotten prison time.

But, hey, the elite take care of their own.

I didn’t watch the video on this one. I am aware that people (not including me) walk out in front of cars these days, but I still view it as a stupid thing to do. When I was a little kid, the very first thing all little kids learned was never to walk in front of cars. Any little kid who couldn’t learn that was viewed as retarded.

He was already crossing the street when the chief hit him from behind.
