So, the House has voted for a government spending bill that defunds Obamacare. Next step: Get it through the Senate, right?
Wrong. In fact, if you vote to bring this House-passed defund bill to the Senate floor, youre actually helping to fund Obamacare, according to the most vocal proponents of the defund strategy. No, Im not making this up. Thats the actual plan.

“What A Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice To Deceive”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah :-/ From the article:
The defund bill doesnt have the votes to clear the Senate. Even worse, if the defund bill ever gets cloture in the Senate and makes it to the floor, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., can simply use a motion to strike in order to remove the defunding provision on the floor with a simple majority, then pass a bill funding the government and send it back to the House. Rather than try to win (or at least force) a vote on defunding Obamacare, defund proponents are now calling for conservative Senators to block the very defund Obamacare bill that just passed the House.
...
The idea is to prevent a vote until the Democrats finally realize we mean business and theyre not getting their way, no matter what. This means we dont pass a spending bill. And this is where we see that the arguments that no one is trying to shut down the government, and we want to fund the government except for Obamacare, have been inaccurate perhaps even disingenuous. The whole point of this strategy, as I noted this summer, is to shut the government down for months.
...
Before you get too excited, though, one minor problem with this strategy is that Obamacare will be fully funded throughout this government shutdown. Yes, thats right its funding doesnt depend on the bill thats being blocked. And even if successful (which it wont be), defund is a temporary victory that doesnt actually prevent Obamacares various job-killing regulations, taxes and mandates from taking effect, or its tax credits from being paid out.
I know Ted Cruz heart and mind are in the right place. But the reality is that we are screwed.
Frankly, I don’t really know what the H*ll this guy is trying to say. I don’t think anyone in the House realizes that this is easy.
I’m all for some tranparency. Let’s see where people stand. Let’s see what Harry Reid sends back.
BUT MOST IMPORTANT, LET’S SEE WHAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO!!!!!
The problem is that they’re not trying to find out where people stand. The goal is to prevent a Senate vote on this bill and shut down the government. It’s just good intentions meets really bad strategy.
There are politicians, talk show hosts, and scrbblers, that all claim to be “conservative”. Most have been insisting that “defunding” will be blamed on a “shut down of government” and that the Republicans will get blamed for the destruction that happens afterward. I’m waiting for the PPP poll that will support that assertion.
But this is the first posting I’ve read where those supporting “defunding” are supporting its implementation. That’s even better than voting against it before voting for it
.
There is no such thing as “shut down the govt.”
If the debt ceiling is not raised the govt cannot incur NEW debt. The ongoing revenue coming in is enough to pay for all essential govt services.
That’s why a so-called “shut down” would be educational. People will notice very little difference in their lives, except for non-essential govt workers who will be temporarily furloughed, and National Parks which may temporarily close.
I recall several years ago when the NE Patriots were headed towards an undefeated season, all of the "experts", each and every single one of them, were 100% convinced that the Pats would end the season 19-0 and go down in time as the greatest team ever.
How'd that turn out?
The thing to remember is that experts are frequently wrong and that what appears hopeless can turn around.
The important thing is not to give in.
Who knows, obama can screw the pouch w/ an ill advised whine or a new defect in ocare will come to light or the GOP could actually stick together and take this fight right to his doorstep.
Burn the Boats!
Don't look back!
Truthfully, I do not expect this to work, as such. But what it *will* do is put Democrats on notice that Obamacare is coming to an end. It may not be today, or next December, but it will be killed dead.
Not ironically in the slightest, Republicans can thank John Roberts for making the shutdown of Obamacare possible.
In past, with FDR’s New Deal, and LBJ’s Great Society, once they had forced their horrific programs through, the Democrats went into a pure defensive mode, because they knew they could stop Republicans from repealing these things unless Republicans got a 2/3rds majority in both houses of congress. A very unlikely thing.
But John Roberts made it clear that the individual mandate is a *tax*. But why does this matter?
Because constitutionally, taxes cannot be blocked. If you have a *simple majority* in both houses of congress, you can kill *any* tax, with the exception of the Income Tax, which has its own constitutional amendment.
But *any* and *every* tax in Obamacare can be ended with a simple majority in both houses, and the president’s signature. This means that Republicans must have both houses and the presidency, but that is a distinct possibility that existed not too long ago, and may soon exist again.
So the bottom line is that we are stuck with Obamacare until there is a Republican president and two Republican houses of congress. But once we do, it is done. Kaput.
And since the Tea Party is still actively culling RINOs, soon they will not be able to block conservatives through treachery.
Huh?
The debt ceiling is a separate issue.
Ted Cruz on Cavuto today said that it depends on Harry Reid.
If it goes back to the House, they should send to the senate separate continuing resolutions for the portions of government they want to fund - the military for example would be funded by a separate continuing resolution.

Ted Cruz reminds me of Mr. Smith (goes to Washington).
He certainly has mobilized the “troops”. However it turns out, it has been good to see the unified effort.
