Old Chinese Maps Show Dokdo Belonged to Korea
Chosun Ilbo ^ | 09/10/2013 | Chosun Ilbo

Two old Chinese maps have been discovered showing that the Dokdo islets belonged to Korea, further undermining Japan's flimsy colonial claim to the rocks.

The two maps were made in the 19th century during the Qing Dynasty and were unveiled by Lee Myeong-hee of Kyunghee University's Humanitas College at a seminar on Sept. 6.

One is an eight-piece folding-screen map of the world from 1845 and depicts Ulleung Island and Dokdo in close proximity to the Korean Peninsula, clearly showing that they belonged to the Chosun Kingdom.

The other map, created in 1851, depicts Ulleung Island and Dokdo in the same way.

Just sayin'.

“One is an eight-piece folding-screen map of the world from 1845 and depicts Ulleung Island and Dokdo in close proximity to the Korean Peninsula...”

“...in close proximity...” Well, it isn’t as if they moved away from Japan.

Thanks for posting this. I had not seen this or heard about this development.

"clearly showing that they belonged to the Chosun Kingdom."

And here I thought the Jews were the chosun people. Who knew it was the Koreans ?

Then I guess Israel just needs to whip out the meets and bounds described in the Old Testament and all will be solved.

Yeh, and old Aztec "maps" showed all unknown lands north of the "known" lands to be open and awaiting only a Priest or Lord to establish his standard to prove its existence and it would be part of the Aztec "empire".

How far back are we going to go? I mean, should we not acknowledge the claims finally of the Saxons and the Gaols after all this time?

And what about the kingdoms many centuries ago from all the lands of India; should they not finally be recognized and allowed their claims from time immemorial?

Old Dutch 1645 maps here show the whole part of New York and New England belonged to the Indian tribes thereof.

“Nothing belong to nobody as long as taxation exists.”

I would instead put it this way:

You only own that which you’re willing and able to defend.

These arguments about who owned what in the past are totally irrelevant. What matters is what you own today and whether you’re willing and able to defend it, by whatever means.

This applies to countries as well as individuals.

Well, I am rather partial to the Dutch, having had an auntie that I cared for greatly when I was growing up, but you make My case even more so with your observation.

You make My point exactly. When do we begin to allow that what was in the past is IN THE PAST! Or is this country going to proclamate that Mexico truly owns the Pacific Western states and England and France rightly own the East Coast and the Louisiana Basin?

Ignoring for the moment "flyover-country"...

Dokdo was never anything but Korean is the point. It is Korean now, it was Korean then. Never anything else. Japan has no “historical” claim on it whatsoever.

You have a point, I think its stupid to go back in time and say “That is ours!”, which is what Japan is trying to do.

Most rational and common sense statement made on this thread. You are exactly right.

1845 is not so long ago. I bet if you found a deed from 1845 that said your family was the owner of a couple of acres of prime real estate, you’d try to claim it. Rightfully so, because it’s yours.

I stepped in some Dokdo down by the lake. I’m not sure who it belongs to.

However,we are not supposed to remember the legal principle that some lands are owned by right of conquest (presumably in a just war)...
