Chicago top cop warns that his officers will shoot concealed carriers

GunsNFreedom.com is reporting an astonishing statement made by Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy.

McCarthy is angry that Illinois has joined the other 49 states in the union that have authorized some level of concealed carry. In an recorded interview McCarthy issues a not so thinly-veiled threat that under his leadership, Chicago Police will shoot concealed carriers:

“You put more guns on the street expect more shootings,” McCarthy said. “I don’t care if they’re licensed legal firearms, people who are not highly trained… putting guns in their hands is a recipe for disaster. So I’ll train our officers that there is a concealed carry law, but when somebody turns with a firearm in their hand the officer does not have an obligation to wait to get shot to return fire and we’re going to have tragedies as a result of that. I’m telling you right up front.”

McCarthy doesn’t just seem to think it may happen; he almost seems to look look forward to it with some sort of vindictive wrath. He asserts that only his police are responsible enough to carry handguns, an assertion that flies in the face of the fact that at least one study shows that police officers are five times more likely to shoot the wrong person than concealed carriers.

A key fact that McCarthy glosses over in claiming that police are so much better trained than the average concealed carrier, is that concealed carriers are not training to be police officers.

Concealed carriers do not learn radio procedures and codes, arrest procedures, the various laws and ordinances, or various other aspects of police work that take up most of the time McCarthy uses to assert his officers are somehow superior when it comes to firearms use.

The sad, simple fact of the matter is that CPD officers rarely train with their firearms. Most fire their weapons only during during the mandatory annual qualification, which lasts just one hour. There are Girl Scout troops with more frequent range time than the Chicago PD.

In most cities, a police superintendent threatening his city’s most law-abiding citizens with bloodshed would result in a groundswell of calls for his ouster or resignation. That outcome is unlikely in Chicago. Citizens are too busy going to funerals of the more than 250 citizens murdered so far this year under McCarthy’s watch in his “gun free” city.

Police officers tend to be the least trained people on the streets. Just because they carry a weapon doesn’t mean they’re proficient with it.

I probably have more training than anyone on his force. What an idiot.

“You put more guns on the street expect more shootings,” McCarthy said, “Because we police officers will be doing that shooting! We prefer a nice clear cut situation with a dead homeowner and a fleeing badguy!!”

Fixed it.

Waiting for the massive wave of “good” cops to strongly denounce this. I’m sure that roar will drown out the noise of those crickets chirping any time now....

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

It depends who shoots first. That is the dumbness thing to announce that who draws first. Bet the citizen wins. Looks like the police state starts with Chicago. The first citizen concealed carrier gets shot the war will start. Police lose.

Hmmm, and maybe fed up concealed carriers will start shooting Chicago thug cops? (And yes, I know all Chicago cops aren’t thugs)

This creep should be very careful before making threats like this. Lawlessness begets lawlessness.

“You put more guns on the street expect more shootings,” McCarthy said.

It is disgraceful for a professional law officer to be that crashingly ignorant in his own field.

It is statistically true that you are more likely to br wrongfully shot by a police officer than you are likely to be shot *at all* by a CCW holder.

I was up there last month, and was SHOCKED what good shape the highways are in. As lame as many things are in Illinois, the roads are pretty darn good, at least compared to Detroit and Cleveland....

I agree with that comment.

Chicago should pass an ordinance that requires all hand guns to worn visibly so the police will know who to shoot. Think of the lives saved!

I drove there to visit the grandkids in Algonquin. But we just drive through on the freeway. We avoid Chicago (and the toll roads) like the plague. In fact, we fill up with gas before we enter Illinois (We come up from Kentucky) and fill up again after we leave the state. We leave as few dollars there as we possibly can.
