The U.S. should seriously consider how to build a new relationship with Russia. After the episode with former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden and the postponement of the bilateral summit, Washington should take a sober look at the facts. Was the Snowden episode unique and did it change the overall logic of recent U.S.-Russian relations? Has the "reset" succeeded in ridding those relations of Cold War-era stereotypes and approaches?
The answer to both questions is an unequivocal "No."
If Washington wants to gain a clear understanding of what is happening, it needs to set aside the idealism inherent in U.S. President Barack Obama's approach to international relations. The time has come to view Moscow's behavior in terms of realpolitik. After all, that is what motivates President Vladimir Putin in his own approach to international relations.
Putin has already sent several simple and clear messages to Washington and to Obama personally in recent years. His goal has been to show the new reality in international relations namely, that the world has become multipolar.
The most important message is that Russia will not miss any opportunity to participate in building the new world order amid the reduction in U.S. global dominance and the rise of China. Under such circumstances, Russia has no interest in trying to "save" the declining West by offering the type of strategic partnership Dmitry Medvedev proposed when he was president. Russia will build its own, independent center of power a Eurasian Union based on a strategic partnership with key former Soviet republics. This perhaps is Putin's own "pivot" away from the West and toward the East.

Seems the world is waking up to the fact that Democrats in power makee for an untrustworthy America. An ostracizing us gor it.
Good job Barry. Then again this will force us into self reliance as it should be so who knows?
But...but, I thought Obama’s RESET was supposed to establish a new relationship with that Evil empire...
It did. We are now...how do it put this delicately...Putin’s bitch. That is a reset from what we were, which was a global power.
So you see? We should cheer the success of Obama foreign policy. It worked brilliantly! We got out reset just as we were promised!
Got ‘our’ reset...
I should also add that we got it with the SUPPORT of the GOP who refused to do anything to blunt Obama’s efforts and on many occasions, supported him outright.
Step one...cleanse our country of the Obama stain.
Not only did Putin and America’s enemies cheer his first election, they absolutely partied when he was re-elected. America’s enemies scratching their heads ask, how did this great nation become a superpower and how did she CHOOSE to lose her power...amazing and sad.
That is an underwear, “poop” stain, very tough to remove unless using strong detergents...
Yes, the “skidmark” president.
Because people who should know better or lesser evils so they can ‘win’. Except the evils they ‘win’ with grow like a cancer and the people who empowered them suddenly get amnesia about it.
Then scream like banshees on internet forums when called on it and deny the consequences of their actions, make excuses and then repeat their mistakes every election..
“Because people who should know better CHOOSE lesser evils so they can ‘win’.
These marks can be removed but not completely. This presidency will leave a very faint (I hope) yellow stain, even after 10 washings. He has truly soiled the nations’ clothing. It will take years to repair his damage.
Interesting. I wonder though whether Russia will cozy up to China, a nation that it has been at odds with in the past, or to India, the other major power in the region and a country Russia has had extensive dealings with?
To further your analogy, the nation’s clothing will not be fit for a thrift store when the Obamantion is done with it.
The underpants will have to be burned and purified with fire so that nothing of them remains...
How the American electorate allowed itself to soil itself so thoroughly is beyond amazement. It chose to “hold it in” until BHO fecal material was released in significant quantities.
Problem is, the Right asked the public if it had let one lose and it replied, no.
The Right asked the public if it wanted to relieve itself before an impending diasaster and it refused that too.
Problem is, all of us have to live with that “movement”.
I can get more gross here but I will stop as the man is worse than the stain...
Of course Putin is going to pivot away from the U.S.
Why shouldn’t any self-respecting world leader NOT turn away from a declining former power that:
1) Sits with its thumb up its collective ass while third-world invaders usurp large swaths of its territory,
2) Elects “leaders” who submissively bow to other heads of state,
3) Intentionally supplants the best medical care system in the world with a higher-cost, lower-quality socialized mess that improves nothing,
4) Paralyzes itself across economic, social and moral lines with an intractable and rapidly metastasizing dependency culture, and
5) Not only turns away from long-held spiritual and moral underpinnings, but openly attacks those who don’t.
At one time, America earned the respect of its friends and fear from its enemies. But all that has been effectively pissed away with apology tours, “resets” and “flexibilities”... hardly the stuff of an assertive, ascendant national power.
Russia is watching and laughing while we self destruct.
Obama is killing us , the Russians know it, all they have to do is sit back and watch.
Russian Nuclear power is not half the threat to America that Obama is.
