Not many years ago, there was an exhibit of Persian art and sculpture on tour at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. My cousin had invited us down for Thanksgiving Day and the extended family was walking through with the usual throngs the day after.

Being somewhat off the beaten path, this wing was somewhat less crowded than most and the crowd was mostly serious adults and their more precocious offspring. Anyway, there were a lot of oohs and ahs because most of art was fabulous; equal to or better than anything the ancient Greeks or Romans produced about the same time.

Then some people begin to remark that around 750 a.d., the level of the art seemed to go noticeably backward. The more sophisticated looked like it had been created with one of those spiral art template sets. The less was more amateurish than some of those drawings from Europe of about the same era.

One teenage girl wondered allowed "What happened to Persia at that time to cause such a drop in their quality of art?"

I couldn't help stating the fact "That was about the time they were forcibly converted to Islam." You could have heard a pin drop after I spoke.
