Forcing “sick days” benefits into small business workplaces is merely backdoor Card Check

The Democrats in New York’s City Council have overridden Mayor Bloomberg’s veto of its bill forcing small businesses to provide “sick days” to their workers. This is a cynical “end run” to Card Check. There is very little chance that Card Check, which would allow unions to “supervise” workers’ votes on whether to unionize, would pass even in today’s political climate. This has forced the desperate unions to find another way to increase their dwindling membership rolls.

Forcing sick days, hell. Become a federal contractor, which we are, and you get to not only provide 10 sick days per year, you also get to pay in accordance to federal wage determinations which set hourly pay rates by position, and to top it off, you get to either provide health insurance / other health benefits OR pay an additional $3.71 per hour on top of the wage determination as a health and welfare benefit.

We are paying unskilled labor in excess of $15.00 per hour in a market that warrants $10 to $11 tops. Yet, we wonder why all bids for government work cost so much?!? Whether you're a union shop or not, you get to pay the prevailing rate as if you are - driving the contract rates up 25% to 40% unnecessarily.

Some employees consider sick days to just be an addition to their vacation days.

We had some people who were always “sick” usually at the end of their vacations or three day holidays.

One man called in sick, then was spotted at a party that evening. He was fired the next day.

Other than the abuses, sick days are GREAT for when you are really sick!

Eventually the unions will die off because more and more people are looking to the Government to “guarantee” all their “benefits” (a la Socialist Europe)
