Harry Bounel was a real person, not only listed in the Census of 1940, when he was a lodger in an apartment in the Bronx, NY, but in the 1920 and 1930 censuses living in Baltimore.

New York, Baltimore???

probably just another coincidence:

The kenyan student used that Baltimore address as a forwarding address in between the time he left Hawaii on June 22, 1962, and his commencement at Harvard in the Fall.

C/O KOINONIA FOUNDATION, PIKESVILLE, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.

Both Frank Laubach and Elizabeth Mooney (Kirk) were on the board of the foundation.

If you follow some of the names you’ll end up at FINDHORN, and you’ll find people like Barbara Hubbard and Seth Velamoor, (father of the Law Clerk who also attended Mercer Island High Scool) and finally you’ll find yourself at a UFO Seminar in Seattle...with the likes of the famous Charlette, but I doubt if you would want to go that far.

Very very strange people...

I don’t have much to add about this mystery, but I have always wondered why it’s been assumed this man was Russian?

On the handwritten US Census forms of 1920, 1930, AND 1940 (these are completed by the census worker in table form, one extensive horizontal line of individual data for each person enumerated), one of the items asked is PLACE OF BIRTH. In all three of these censuses, Harry Bounel's place of birth is listed as RUSSIA. Since telling a census worker back then that you were born in Russia gave the individual being surveyed no particular advantage (if anything, it might have worked to the respondent's disadvantage, given the connection between Russia and communism and the suspicion that Russian birth might cause), one can be pretty darn sure that Harry Bounel was indeed born in Russia.

The surname Bounel, both then and now, was and is very rare in the United States. It is often confused with other, similar names that are more common, such as Bonnel. You might want to check the name of the English railroad baron; could be similar but different.

Thanks, it is a name that appears in England, but the census details you mention makes it quite clear that the country of origin was Russia, although it’s certainly not a Russian name.
