A new study shows the relaxation of marijuana laws in Colorado has caused a significant spike in the number of young children treated for accidentally eating marijuana-laced cookies, candies, brownies and beverages.

The people that brought them to the hospital probably didn’t know what was consumed. I imagine if it were the parents that found out, they would explain to the kids, watch them, put on some cartoons, listen to them laugh and then put them to bed.

I don’t remember if the task was completed or not...... it was Christmas

Is THC the only ingredient?

There have been lots of stories about people hospitalized after being given brownies and stuff laced with pot.

“Why are these children being treated in the emergency room if it isn't harmful?”

Because they consumed too much and probably could not be woken up (temporarily) so the parents freaked out. Also, about 10% of people get anxiety instead of sleepiness from eating too much.

Obviously you may feel like hell but there is no toxic danger from over-consuming it. The only danger is passing out and asphyxiating yourself with a pillow, etc. Someone simply needs to watch the person and make sure their airways are open.

In large amounts it is like sleeping pills but much safer since there is no possible overdose. See my post 19

If someone is giving children pot brownies they should be imprisoned for life!

People SHOULD freak out.

There are hundreds of naturally occurring cannabiniods that are similar to THC. Not one has been shown to be toxic. In the Victorian era, super concentrated cannabis extract was consumed by the elite as an alternative painkiller to toxic heroin and laudanum. There is not a single recorded case of overdose.

People are hospitalized from cannabis because they essentially go into a coma or feel too much anxiety(about 10% of people). They are monitored until they wake up so they do not choke themselves in their sleep. The hospital also pumps their stomach so the effects go away sooner.

They are simply in a deep sleep. It does not mean any damage has occured to their body.

Children recover quickly in most cases, Wang said. "They don't need more than a day or two of hospitalization," he said.

The children require hospitalization.

It’s about accidentally eating them, not giving it to them.

What if a child has a THC soda and brownie before going to bed and then suffocate to death before anyone finds out?

“What if a child has a THC soda and brownie before going to bed and then suffocate to death before anyone finds out?”

It's possible but highly unlikely. There are far more dangerous items already in your home. The most dangerous are probably sweet chewable medications and vitamins.

Overdosing on nearly any OTC pills can easily cause liver/kidney failure, internal bleeding, brain swelling, etc. Lots of the children's meds taste like candy and are far more dangerous than candy cannabis.

Kids can try to get into anything. Heck, even my laundry detergent now has a child lock. The solution is to reasonably keep dangerous things away from kids, not ban everything that a kid can potentially harm themselves with.

Looks like you've thrown in the towel regarding marijuana being harmless.

The fact is ER visits and hospitalizations for children have gone way up in Colorada since they legalized.

The main side effect of 13 is, it causes the patient to believe it is harmless and then spend the rest of their life doing nothing but ingesting and defending it.

There have been a grand total of 14 such ER cases in the last 3 years in the entire state of Colorado. I'll bet the only reason it is going up is because parents are no longer afraid to bring their kids in since it is legal. http://www.geekosystem.com/colorado-kids-pot-cookies/

And again, there has never been a single confirmed case of damage from eating cannabis in all of recorded history - not even from choking. These ER visits have all been unnecessary freakouts by hoverparents.

NOTHING is “harmless”. Even locking your kid inside a padded, germ-free home is harmful.

Letting your kids play on a concrete street is more dangerous than feeding them all the cannabis they can eat. Hundreds of times more kids are hospitalized from simple trips/falls.

Some people are compulsive by nature and will always abuse something. Cannabis is the safest thing they can abuse. Even abusing sugar and fried food is far more dangerous/addictive to the body than cannabis.

The fact is there has not been a SINGLE case of bodily harm from cannabis in all of recorded human history. Even when abused beyond all reason. The only possible damage is from the (easily avoided) smoke but even that is under dispute. Some studies say the smoke is too course to saturate deep lung tissue.

The fact is that nearly EVERY other substance is far more toxic. You can walk into a pharmacy and any OTC pills you pick at random will be far more toxic. Many things you find on a store spice rack are more toxic. Heck, even drinking water has hurt far more people than cannabis.

None of the press releases state the period of time for the study. There's only a distinction of before the law and after the law.

A total of 1,378 patients under age 12 were evaluated for unintentional ingestions – 790 before Sept. 30, 2009 and 588 after Oct. 1, 2009. The number of children treated for exposure to marijuana before Sept. 30 was zero. The number from Oct. 1 on was 14 with eight of those coming directly from consuming marijuana food products.
1378 is the total number of ER visits. 14 is probably the number of hospitalizations.

You said yourself that a victim should be monitored for asphyxiation in post 27.
