Above are the crime statistics. In Cave Creek, almost nil. In Costa-mesa...hope they all can get California CCW’s...

If they are really interested in getting their CCW, have them look up ftatv.com (Firearm Training Associates). They have classes for CCWs and I believe they are around 90% effective in their students getting their CCW from the OC Sheriff.

“Does John Wayne airport still have that museum? I was there more years than I like to count and it was pretty cool.”

If you are thinking about the Lyons museum off of Redhill, it is still there. Nice place to visit. Last time I was there a B-25 took off for a test flight.

“I am surprised there are any conservative areas in California. I guess its like fort Apache surrounded by natives wanting to take your stuff. I’ll mention Balboa Island to her.’

Most of area code 949 (south OC) is still conservative. Part of Costa Mesa is in the 949 area code.

Costa Mesa is a nice city, one worry is the amount of homeless that wander the streets. South OC cities strongly discourage the homeless from being there so they wind up in Costa Mesa.

I think the biggest shock is going to be the traffic

One thing that stands out to me when I moved to Southern California is that accepted practice of automobile trips in and around the area is always referred to in time rather than distance.

Houston’s the same way - but that’s because you drive across the whole state of Houston to go anywhere. In my younger days, I’d travel (with friends) an hour or more to a nightclub. It’s the “wide open spaces” thing. In SoCal, it’s the “number of people trying to get to the same area at the same time” thing.

My wife wants us to move to Orange County to be closer to my daughter in the town of Orange but the thought of living out there is disturbing to say the least. But the good things everyone here has talked about are very good indeed as well as being true. We’ll be out there in two weeks so I’ll be sure to check out Costa Mesa. And here’s the punchline: we are New Jersey residents our entire lives!

The best bet is to treat it like getting into a hot tub.

After six months they will likely know if they can abide the place, and after a year it is either set down roots or leave.

So I would keep the resume fresh, save the packing boxes, do a lot of reconnaissance and “meet & greet” with the neighbors, because a pot of coffee and 10 minutes can sometimes get you a year’s worth of useful information (and have a local map handy to note down places of interest.)

Be sure to ask about unusual local laws, HOA restrictions,

You will save a ton of money if you comparison shop for groceries one weekend. It will tell you which stores are best for bulk purchases, overall prices, sales and coupons, etc. If shopping at three stores can save $100 a month on groceries, it is worth the effort.

Use the Internet to map the cheapest gas stations on your major routes, as this will save big bucks as well, especially in California.

“Compared to the rest of the country, Costa Mesa’s cost of living is 65.50% Higher than the U.S. average.”

“A big crime concern in Costa Mesa is car break ins and thefts. So it would be wise to have high end car security and anti-theft devices installed.”

Hi all, I live in CM. Love it here. Less than a mile from the beach. There isn’t a problem with the homeless at all. That’s simply not true. Newport is less than a mile away. HB is so wonderful. Tues evenings in HB, Main Street is closed down for a farmer’s market. Great food, live bands, NEVER any problems there. Dog Beach is a couple of miles away. PCH is a wonderful drive, either South to Laguna, or north to Long Beach and beyond. They’ll love it here. Not to mention that Grant Bros, outdoor products and gun shop, is right on Newport Blvd. Its been there since the 50s, I believe. Lots to do, and there are any number of beaches. Snow skiing is less than 2 hours away in the mountains...gorgeous up there. And the desert, Palm Springs/Desert, Indian Wells....all in all, a great place to live. They’ll love it here.

Their plan is to rent (they found a house) and check out the job and area. They know about HOA’s since their first house was in one and they found it intolerable. At least for now the crime is property and not assault and such. Your advice is really good for anyone moving anywhere not just to the land of fruit and nuts.
Thanks
