The best bet is to treat it like getting into a hot tub.
After six months they will likely know if they can abide the place, and after a year it is either set down roots or leave.
So I would keep the resume fresh, save the packing boxes, do a lot of reconnaissance and “meet & greet” with the neighbors, because a pot of coffee and 10 minutes can sometimes get you a year’s worth of useful information (and have a local map handy to note down places of interest.)

You will save a ton of money if you comparison shop for groceries one weekend. It will tell you which stores are best for bulk purchases, overall prices, sales and coupons, etc. If shopping at three stores can save $100 a month on groceries, it is worth the effort.
Use the Internet to map the cheapest gas stations on your major routes, as this will save big bucks as well, especially in California.

Their plan is to rent (they found a house) and check out the job and area. They know about HOAs since their first house was in one and they found it intolerable. At least for now the crime is property and not assault and such. Your advice is really good for anyone moving anywhere not just to the land of fruit and nuts.
