It's "the servant problem".

The movers and shakers of society really like the idea of cheap labor. Americans who own homes, pay taxes and expect to live long enough to collect social security are not considered ideal workers -- they charge too much for their labor.

The movers and the shakers need a supply of people who don't demand benefits (gov't freebies are good enough!), don't pay taxes (big savings right there) and don't expect to live forever -- that kind of labor is gold, baby!

That's the essence of it. Add in the money and influence they pour on the political class in D.C. and we have the witches brew that is now before us.
