I believe hunger rules their army. I believe if the DPRK army starts amassing on the border, everyone in South Korea should start cooking BBQ with fans blowing the smell north. All the DPRK army would surrender for a full belly.

While there may be a few high ranking military officers who know the folly of provoking a war with the US or South Korea, they would face immediate execution if they showed any wavering from Dear Leader's orders. Given the frequent purges of the military leadership their loyalty is almost assured. Since at least two generations of North Koreans know little or nothing about the outside world and have been brainwashed since childhood to firmly believe the propaganda being fed to them, it makes one wonder if there are any rational people left in the country's leadership.
