A federal civil rights complaint has been filed against the Salt Lake City School Board after a principal booted a Cub Scout pack from an elementary school.
About 30 eight to 11 year-olds were told they could no longer meet at Mountain View Elementary School because the Boy Scout’s ban on gay members in leaders conflicted with the school district’s anti-bias policy.
The ban drew the ire of Michael Clara, a school board member and lifetime Boy Scout. Clara filed the federal complaint on behalf of two Latino parents.
“I believe it is an assault on the founding principles of our country for school officials to attempt to exclude a voice no less legitimate than its own from public school participation,” Clara told Fox News. “A marketplace of ideas devoid of competitive viewpoints engenders an insidious society of conformity, contrary to the fundamental precepts of our Constitution.”
He claims the school district is violating the Boy Scout Act – a law that requires schools to allow access to the Boy Scouts if they allow access to outside groups.
“It’s unfortunate this principal has the backing of the district to implement their own form of discrimination and racism,” Clara told Fox News.....

And why don’t the Girls Scouts allow male scout leaders? For the same reason the Cub Scouts don’t allow gay scout leaders.

Why would you ban kids from having fun and learning how to start a fire and identify leaves, or how to identify trail markings?

It’s hard to feel sorry for anyone that STILL sends their kids to public schools. There are almost ALWAYS options, even if it means living in a crappy apartment, in a crappy neighborhood.
Will knowing the race/ethnicity of the parents change the legitimacy of the Federal complaint?
Does being ‘Latino’ make them any more or less caring parents than if they were white, black, red, or yellow?

Amen to that - why are the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts meeting in hostile territory any way (public bldgs) - aren’t there enough churches out there that would invite them for their meetings? Cub scouts used to meet in the Den leader’s home back in ancient times. This is getting ridiculous.
How do you know that the kids attend the school? I have a boy scout troop that meets at a public school. We have kids from all over the place, i.e. way beyond the borders of just the elementary school that we meet at.
We happen to be sponsored by the PTA at the school too.
Go figure?

I’m just playing the odds, and trying to make a point. I do suspect that at least 75% of FReepers are STILL sending their kids to public schools, even with everything that’s been discussed here. They just manage to rationalize that those bad, evil, people are teaching at the next school district, not their own.

It is an outright lie that homosexuals are excluded. I know...because I have a cousin who was a boy scout and a homosexual. It’s just that nobody knew he was a homosexaul at the time. I’m sure there’s been thousands of homosexual Boy Scouts. They just didn’t tell anybody they were homosexuals. I didn’t find out my cousin was a homosexual until about thirty years later. But why would you want to announce your sexual proclivities anyway? I don’t recall anyone asking us if we were heterosexuals when I joined. I didn’t know what the terms meant.
