Yes, the only way to know the future is to live it. We make preparations for the future as we see fit and only the future will determine whether we need it or not in an long term emergency situation. I have emergency insurance by the prepping I did. I made that decision to do that just as others can decide not to do that. For those who want to prep, our prepper threads give information to those people.
I know I need my preps available every year during hurricane season. If one comes, I don't know if I need one day or one month or a year of preps. It depends on how much, if any, damage I have to my house, or to the area to take out power and water and food sources and no one can know that until it happens. Most of the people who went through Sandy did not have preps and suffered great hardship. I recall the elderly woman who lived in a highrise in NY and couldn't walk to the bottom to get water. That really hurt me to think of that when I had water by the many jugs here in my house and no way to get them to her.
HEY MAN! YOU SHRUNK MY HEADS! ;-)
Shrinkage.
I understand you have the best jugs on Free Republic.
Just hoping I can unload my house and everything else anchoring me to California and get my family settled into Texas before it’s too late. If Prince Rebus and Tokyo Rove blow it in next year’s election by running a herd of loser RINOs and or for whatever reason we fail to gain sufficient majorities of conservatives in the house and senate to rein in the wannabe dictator, and his dem/RINO enablers, this country could be facing its last days as a somewhat free nation. I wouldn’t dream of telling anyone they should not be prepared.
“So youre telling me Jim Robinson is a prepper? To what extent, and how would you know?”
I know BECAUSE HE IS SMART. He knows what is happening to this country.
BTW, until I saw what happened in Cypress (coming to a USA near you), I used to hop on these from time to time and poke gentle fun about the STHF part of the Prepper thinking. But I was always respectful and appreciated the Emergency Preparedeness aspects of Prepping.
But now, I really do think it could happen here. There are too many liberals licking their chops at the idea of reaching in and just grabbing our money overnight, then slamming the door shut. All hell breaks loose, and in the aftermath, they take over.
Watch Europe closely -- it will go from small country to large country faster than wildfire.
And when it does, don't come knocking on my door for help. It'll be up to you to figure it out when you don't have squat and what little you have up for grabs.
“I understand you have the best jugs on Free Republic.”
For once, I am speechless and you caused it.
I never saw so many kinds of AK 47’s in my life. ;-)
PING!!!!!!!
Thanks Jim for clearing that up.

Speaking of water jugs...I took your advice about the stackable ones. Love 'em!! The cheapest I've found is $1/each, on sale at Randalls.
I consider your - and every other "prepper" on these threads - advice, suggestions, etc. invaluable. I'm thankful for Kart's threads and (most) ALL posts.
Well, I didn't know you were sick, too during that time. I was taking those antibiotic pills and drinking cranberry juice and ran a fever for a few days of that. Then the fever left and kept taking the pills and drinking that juice. Put that on top of everything one has to do when there is no power, and it wasn't fun.
An emergency doesn't care if you are sick, it's an emergency anyway.
Having been through a huge snow storm a few years ago, I can tell you I was barely prepared enough. The roads to my previous somewhat rural neighborhood were not a priority and were not plowed until we could get a private backhoe to clear the road - after ten days without power or transportation. I expected only a week before people could get out and rationed supplies to last more than two weeks, but only a few of us could even melt snow for drinking or flushing water after the second day. If most people have 2-5 days of food at home (and that's what all but one of my neighbors had), would you rather have one or two people around who have the option of sharing, or would you rather tell everyone that a couple weeks of supplies would be enough? We fed and provided water for more grumpy, hungry, unprepared, and ungrateful people than you can imagine during that last week we were unable to get out of the neighborhood.
I think it's more likely than not that we will not go through a nationwide or global SHTF event in the next decade. However, I've been through several local and regional events worse than that snowstorm, and I still live by the Boy Scout Motto. Given the major mistakes being made by the federal government, I am not willing to rule out the possibility that things could get very ugly for a long time in the United States or globally. If that happens, I will be cautious in sharing with my neighbors. How much would you want stored if no one could or at least would help you?

SHTF doesnt generally drop by at the best of times. In fact, SHTF thrives and grows exponentially under more adverse circumstances.
So, suck it up, put on your boots, and power through it SHTF doesnt care and neither can you!
1. SHTF doesnt care about inclement weather snow, hail, tornadoes and hurricanes all just add to the party atmosphere for SHTF.
2. SHTF doesnt care that you sprained your ankle, broke your leg or are otherwise less than ambulatory. If you have to bug out without a vehicle, you have to bug out, regardless of your injury status.
3. SHTF doesnt care that you decided to start prepping after the trip to Disneyworld (because that trip is expensive!!!!)
4. SHTF doesnt care that you are on a boat in the middle of the ocean, regardless of what you paid for the luxury cruise. (Check out recent ill-fated Carnival Cruise of the Triumph if you dont believe me!)
5. SHTF doesnt care that you had planned to get your vehicle repaired. You have to evacuate regardless of the leak from the oil pan, the condition of the brakes and the funny noise in the transmission.
6. SHTF doesnt care that the entire family is ill with the stomach flu. The entire family will just have to pause to throw up while bugging out.
7. SHTF doesnt care that you need new hiking boots and that you just havent had time to get to the store and buy them.
8. SHTF doesnt care that you planned to buy some bulk foods with your next paycheck.
9. SHTF doesnt care that you always use electronic banking. If the ATMs are down and you have no cash, you cannot buy anything.
10. SHTF doesnt care that you used all your ammo at the range and Wal-Mart has been out for the past month.
11. SHTF doesnt care that the grocery store is closed because of a power outage and you only have a can of peas and some saltine crackers in the house.
12. SHTF doesnt care that you are wearing high heels when your car plummets to the bottom of a ravine you still have to climb out.
13. SHTF doesnt care that the pharmacies are closed because of a pandemic and that you have no OTC or herbal medicines at home if you catch the virus, you will suffer through it without medicine to treat it. And so will your kids.
14. SHTF doesnt care that your truck is almost out of gas and the local gas stations have closed because of the disaster. If you have to bug out, you may end up walking instead of driving.
15. SHTF doesnt care that you are depressed because you just broke up with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend. S happens when S happens.
16. SHTF doesnt care that you have made a rock solid plan to get in shape - as soon as the weather warms up.
17. SHTF doesnt care that you are visiting your in-laws, the most unprepared people on the planet.
18. SHTF doesnt care that you had planned to get the propane tank refilled and now the propane trucks arent running.
19. SHTF doesnt care that your wood is not dry.
20. SHTF doesnt care that you have 300 pounds of beans and rice but failed to plan on a way to cook them.
21. SHTF doesnt care that you dont know how to cook over an open fire without inflicting 2nd degree burns on yourself.
22. SHTF doesnt care if you have only a weeks supply of toilet paper if the crisis lasts longer than a week, things will be progressively less pleasant regardless of your intention to purchase more Charmin.
23. SHTF doesnt care you planned to reinforce your door frame and install a metal security door if thugs arrive to invade your home, your hollow core door will serve as a minor inconvenience instead of a deterrent.
24. SHTF doesnt care if you believe the fecal matter is headed towards the oscillating device or whether you think its a conspiracy theory.
25. Whatever your excuse may be, you may rest assured, it could easily be on this list. And SHTF wont care about that either.

I think some people do take prepping way past the point I would, but A) that's their right and B) there are a lot worse ‘hobbies’ to have. I fall into the category of being ready for a serious earthquake or maybe a few weeks of societal breakdown but am not going to prepare for the End of the world as we know it, SHTF, Zombie Apocalypse, whatever. But that is merely my personal choice as to Point of diminishing returns vs probability; putting down people who calculate and prioritize differently (unless they are exploiting the gullible) is stupid.
In short, keep up the good work. We all have different scenarios, from some who would actually welcome a chance to recreate society to those who have no interest in living through anything that doesn't see the restoration of cable inside of two weeks. I appreciate your posts and links.
What a CROCK!
It sure as H wont be folks who refused to prepare for it.
Exactly!
There are also lots of Freepers who do not post on prepper threads but DO believe the fecalobama could hit the fan and we read the threads to learn to prepare. I'm one of them.
