In 2008, Mark Krikorian published an important new book arguing against permissive immigration. The book's central idea: what has changed since Ellis Island days is not the immigrants; it's the society they are immigrating to.
In 1913, a Sicilian who migrated to New York City to do manual labor would discover a society willing to pay a high wage for his effort.
In 2013 not so. Yesterday's New York Times reports on a new study confirming Krikorian's insight.
People of Mexican descent in New York City are far more likely to be living in poor or near-poor households than other Latinos, blacks, whites or Asians, according to a study to be released on Thursday.
Nearly two-thirds of the citys Mexican residents, including immigrants and the native-born, are living in low-income households, compared with 55 percent of all Latinos; 42 percent of blacks and Asians; and 25 percent of whites, said the report by the Community Service Society, a research and advocacy group in New York City that focuses on poverty......

From the article:
The United States is already evolving into a society much harsher and less hospitable for the less-skilled. Yet American elites seem determined to enlarge and perpetuate a problem they already don’t know how to solve: how to create economic opportunities for the least economically competitive half of the population.
Yesterday, the Center for American Progress released a study of the projected economic effects of the president’s immigration proposals. It asserted that immediate full amnesty - residency plus citizenship - would raise immigrant incomes and thereby government revenues.
Over 10 years, that additional tax revenue would sum to $184 billion$116 billion to the federal government and $68 billion to state and local governments.
CAP gets its impressive number with a crummy trick: omitting the increased costs of legalization. Previously illegal immigrants will become eligible for Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits, unemployment insurance, food stamps, and other federal and state programs. Because the illegals are predominantly very low-income, their demand on such programs will be heavy - and not only long-term, but likely multigenerational.
Why on earth would we deliberately expand the ranks of the least skilled by tens of millions more people imported from abroad, whose grandchildren and great-grandchildren will still require government aid into the 22nd century? That’s the question to keep in mind as the American elite tumbles its way to unthinking consensus in favor of a second large immigration amnesty in 30 years.
David Frum?? Siding with Mark Krikorian/CIS??? Saying this:
“Things are not improving in the second generation either.
Mexican youth who have left school native-born and foreign-born alike have considerably lower levels of educational attainment than their peers, with more than half lacking a high school diploma.
The fact that native-born Mexican young people are less likely than other Latinos (and other racial/ethnic groups) to attain high school diplomas and enroll in college is extremely troubling, the report said.......Because the illegals are predominantly very low-income, their demand on such programs will be heavy - and not only long-term, but likely multigenerational...............Why on earth would we deliberately expand the ranks of the least skilled by tens of millions more people imported from abroad, whose grandchildren and great-grandchildren will still require government aid into the 22nd century? I agree, just wow!
Frum absolutely nails it. Mark Krikorian is a good friend of mine, and he is brilliant on this issue. I am surprised that the normally RINO Frum is on the conservative side on this critical issue, and diametrically opposed to the Bush Clan.

I’m speechless. David Frum?? And CPAC/ACU wouldn’t let Krikorian be on their little ‘immigration/AMNESTY’ panel.
The “elites,” ie, the dimmiecrats, McStain, Grahamnesty, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, et al, are out of their ever-lovin’ gourds to want to expand these problems by foisting tens of millions more of these unfortunate souls on our already overburdened society.

But GE and Microsoft want amnesty and more guest workers. Set up and SOLD OUT!
Fools to the left of us, Fools on the right - stuck in the middle with Amnesty!

Here is the NY Times report:
Mexican New Yorkers Are More Likely to Live in Poor Households
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/21/mexican-new-yorkers-are-more-likely-to-live-in-poor-households/
[snip]The study was commissioned by the Deutsche Bank Foundation following the publication of an article in The New York Times in 2011 about extraordinarily low educational achievement among Mexican immigrants in New York City. The foundation has also started an initiative intended to improve the educational and economic achievement of the Mexican population in New York City, with an emphasis on children and their families. “
So...their liberal answer is to GIVE THEM MORE! Have any of them ever heard the Milton Friedman phrase, ‘you get more of what you subsidize?’
The sheer huge numbers of Mexican migrants creates this situation. They don’t have to learn English, they don’t have to learn to earn the handouts. They can have their own country within a country. And the liberals can’t figure out why the Mexicans are on the bottom of the rung...they are there because they don’t care! And the pay is good. They make it difficult, even for David Frum and the NY Times to not paint with that BROAD brush!
Wow.
Perhaps Frum, in the words of John McLaughlin, "lurched uncontrollably into the truth", or perhaps his falling-out with Manor Bush and their Yankee-mandarin taskmasters and wannabee-Masters of the Universe has produced a demonstration of divine Providence, to use such a RiNO as Frum for a worthwhile cause.
Either way, the model/theory/excuse that let a generation of RiNO's cover up their swamping of the Republic with Orwellian masses of hungry Mexican immigrants is being gutted in Macy's storefront window.
Color me impressed.
PS: The Kirchner regime in Argentina is running the same sort of immigration policy. Black hearts think alike.
BTT
As I said to another Freeper today, the GOP (and related support systems) is lousy with liberals, moderates and psuedoConservatives who like to be seen as sitting at the cool kids table. It is bereft of principle, pursuing Democrat goals and anyone still supporting all but probably 5 people in it (and Rand and Rubio sure have proved they aren’t one of those five lately) is contributing to the downfall of America and every bit as much a problem. It needs to be burnt to the ground, plowed under and the earth it sat upon salted and fertilized with plutonium.
And after a couple beers, I might loosen up and tell you what I really think about it.
Its obvious the ruling elite see an advantage for themselves in a nation of semi-illiterates scrambling in the gutter to earn a living while an educated, albeit shrinking, middle class looks for protection from the former.
“And after a couple beers, I might loosen up and tell you what I really think about it.”
lol
Trust me, I was being nice ;)
Re: “Previously illegal immigrants will become eligible for Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits, unemployment insurance, food stamps, and other federal and state programs.”
In Washington state, ILLEGAL immigrants are already completely eligible for all the programs listed above!
We require NO proof of legal residence for anyone who applies for the programs listed above.
Have I gone completely senile?
I was one of Free Republic's most passionate opponents of the 2005-2006 Bush-McCain Amnesty.
As I recall, David Frum was a passionate supporter.
In fact, David Frum’s support was so passionate I stopped reading “National Review!”

That’s the way I remember it! Maybe some of them are getting a conscience.

Thanks for the morning chuckle Norm!
People forget his "Hard Right" phase which coincided with the 1994 Gingrich win. There may be some things Frum won't do, but most things are negotiable for him if it advances his career.
I was going to call BS on your anti-RINO diatribe, but in actual fact more Democrats did vote against the 1965 Immigration Act than Republicans.
So you're right: it's not something that the GOP moderates (which by today's standards included most of the party after Goldwater was defeated) can blame on Democrats alone.
But you will find that even Reagan didn't do much against even illegal immigration. The lure of cheap labor is a lot stronger than party or ideological divisions.
These SOBs we elected want that for all America. When will we say enough is enough?
