The Real Problem With Rob Portman's Flip Flop On Marriage
The Looking Spoon ^ | 3-15-13 | The Looking Spoon

As Senator Rob Portman has demonstrated, people are entitled to their opinions as much as they are entitled to change their mind. While I remain someone who supports traditional marriage I too have recognized that the momentum away from it is unstoppable (and at our own peril). It's why I don't spend a lot of time and brain damage on it. Of the moral decay plaguing America and the world this one issue is impossible to sway people on because those who don't believe there are inherent differences in gender that impact the raising of a child will simply not see a fundamental difference in gay vs. straight marriages (or their families).

Marriage is the foundation of civilization, those of us who don't believe it should be messed with are willing to hold that position against increasingly impossible headwinds because...IT'S. THAT. IMPORTANT.

The problem with Portman's flip on this is how easily it came to him. His constituency extends beyond his own household, and his power is beholden to them, not his son. There are gay people in my life who I care for and love deeply. You can love gay people and not agree with their grand plan for changing marriage if you think it's important enough.

Apparently it wasn't so for Portman, and Big Fur Hat over at iOwnTheWorld raises a very legitimate question and Althouse raises another about the revelation that he's a really squishy guy.

This is why we need to pray for our elected officials, among many.

What a disappointment this "conservative" is!

I'm sure glad his son doesn't like sheep!

Yes, but if he did, Portman would now be “evolving” on bestiality.

I disagree that gay marriage is unstoppable. If we had the to guts to show people the gay lifestyle as it is, gay marriage would never happen. Why do people believe in the sanctification of sodomy? I do not understand why people engage in a lot of sugary support for gays and don’t really look at what they are promoting.

Hubris is the original sin and the most deadly one. The idea that homosexual marriage is new and a sign of progress is a belief originating in pure hubris. Homosexual couplings that are approved of by society have been tried before and the civilizations that have tried them have ceased to exist. On the other hand, civilizations that have made marriage between a man and a woman the foundation of their social order have continued to exist from ancient times into the present.

So following his logic, if his son was a murderer, rapist, or in bestiality he could adjust and be for murder, rape or bestiality. Just sort of wonder if he could be against anything if his son was for it.

What is it with people like Portman, and Cheney? You should not change your principles because your child is WRONG.

Love your child, but hate their sin.
