First lady Michelle Obama, surrounded by servicemen and women, made a surprise appearance at Sunday night's Oscar ceremony when she appeared via live video from Washington to present the award for Best Picture. Jack Nicholson was present on stage to hand off the award to Ben Affleck for Argo.
Obama praised the nominees for the night's highest honor, saying the films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar could teach lessons that "apply to all of us no matter who we are, what we look like, where we come from and who we love." She said she was excited to pay tribute to movies that "lift our spirits, broaden our minds and transport us to places we can never imagine."
Obama then announced Argo as the Oscar winner for Best Picture, a film about the Iran hostage crisis that celebrated a collaboration of the movie industry and Washington.
Some thought the surprise appearance was another inappropriate mix of Hollywood and politics, with President Barack Obama often being accused of using the industry to campaign. Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post called the first lady's appearance "downright weird:"
"It is not enough that President Obama pops up at every sporting event in the nation. Now the first lady feels entitled, with military personnel as props, to intrude on other forms of entertaining (this time for the benefit of the Hollywood glitterati who so lavishly paid for her husband's election). I'm sure the left will holler that once again conservatives are being grouchy and have it in for the Obamas. Seriously, if they really had their president's interests at heart, they'd steer away from encouraging these celebrity appearances. It makes both the president and the first lady seem small and grasping...."

To be perfectly honest I could not care any less about Michelle on the Oscar’s. I don’t watch them anyway.
It is a shame to have the military she hates standing behind her as props.Background. Eyewash.
The use of military people as props (at midnight east coast time) makes me want to puke.
Well, In the last five years she and her husband have certainly proven they are in the entertainment industry, so I guess it was okay.
cult of personality is an ugly thang
“Small and grasping” is absolutely the KINDEST thing that can be said about them. Let’s hope this little “cameo” by Moooosh
will be seen even by some “admirers” of theirs as being at least just a “bit much”. And let’s then hope they fail to get the message and just keep doing this kind of thing as the country further disintegrates.Because the country is going to anyway and it might as well with them in the foreground making asses of themselves/
Shouldn’t she be in a solitary SuperMax prison cell instead of presenting an Oscar?
NO.
The only place she should be presenting herself and that fake hubby is at Leavenworth or San Quentin.
She said she was excited to pay tribute to movies that “lift our spirits, broaden our minds and transport us to places we can never imagine.”
I think she meant, “and transport YOU to places I have been on your dime”
Why not, the Oscar show is just a liberal circle jerk.
Naturally the same libs who see nothing wrong with one of the Obamas showing up at an awards ceremony would be howling with outrage if a Bush or a Reagan showed up to present an award. The irritating thing is libs never see the hypocrisy. But I never watch awards ceremonies anyway, so I avoided the pain of seeing Michelle. Next year we’ll probably see King Barack bless his subjects at the awards.
It is unseemly. Even though she is the First Lady, it is unpresidential and it cheapens the office. Then again, her husband violates those very things on a daily basis, and has done so since January 2009. The most unpresidential President and First Lady since the birth of the republic.
This is an additional slap in the face (Argo) for those of us who would like to see justice served for the treason in Benghazi.
That was a bunch of bilge she was spouting wasn’t it?
I don’t think many watch the oscars and the dimwits who find it interesting are already marxists and useful idiots, anyway.
