Trail of fugitive ex-cop turns very cold in Big Bear
The Los Angeles Times ^ | February 8, 2013 | Phil Willon, Joseph Serna and Kenneth R. Weiss

The massive dragnet for a fugitive ex-cop continued Friday, with more than 100 officers conducting a fruitless search in the snowy, forested mountains around Big Bear Lake for an armed gunman who police say is on a vengeful rampage.

As the falling snow piled up, authorities pledged to continue the manhunt until they find Christopher Jordan Dorner, the 33-year-old former Los Angeles police officer suspected of killing three people, or stumble on definitive evidence that he is no longer in the area.

The trail has gone cold since Dorner's Nissan Titan pickup was found Thursday morning engulfed in flames on a U.S. Forest Service dirt road between the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski resorts. A set of footprints in the snow led away from the burned truck. It took more than five hours for experts to confirm that it was Dorner's vehicle and search parties to begin a methodical sweep of an area stretching across eight square miles.

While ski-masked SWAT teams went door-to-door checking hundreds of homes and shuttered cabins, other authorities fanned out on foot, slogging through fresh snow with search dogs. The teams combed backcountry and checked every shed, trash bin and barrel where the fugitive could hide. Dorner is described as African American, 6 feet tall and 270 pounds...

Meanwhile, he's probably in Chino, laughing his head off.

He’s probably doing this to show the world how inept these “experts” are. As well as how violent the LAPD is.

Shooting 2 women delivering newspapers? Someone also mentioned in another thread they shot at another truck as well.

Just a humble opinion over this. If I was this guy...I’d have a friend who lives up in Big Bear...drive the truck up...set fire to ensure no fingerprints off it, and the friend just hikes five miles over to his place.

I’m of the mind that this guy is quietly sitting with an associate or two...who all share the same view of a bad-cop atmosphere in LA. He can sit quietly for six weeks while they sit there and pull sixty hours a week of duty (don’t know where the extra cost will come from). Then he’ll come out and perform one shooting, and go back into a month-long silence.

I don’t think this guy will make mistakes. He’s a bit smarter than what they typically go up against...and he’s one of their own. He knows where they hang out, and how to trip them up. Figure a car bomb or two along the way....probably some mail-bombs. This could turn into a very long year for the LA police department.

And eventually....some reporter is going to reopen the mess that created this and ask stupid questions. He may have been half-right about their actions being wrong.

He knows how the police operate. He knew they would fall for the old “flaming vehicle” ploy, spending a lot of time working Big Bear, while he was probably heading for the AZ desert....a classic distraction move.

And why in the world do SWAT teams have to wear masks to search door-to-door? Oh well, at least they kept their noses warm in the snow.

I think it was the Torrance PD that rammed a Honda Ridgeline and fired shots at it. No injuries.

Oh okay, I didn’t hear of that. They fired shots and no one was injured?

Do these cops ever go to the range? never mind....hopefully they won’t.

If they did, those 2 poor ladies may not be alive today.

The DC snipers were just a former buck sergeant Army mechanic and a boy, and look how many people they terrorized.

He could not have been within 100 miles of that blue truck when it lit up. there are only a couple ways up or down that mountain and he knew that he could not be on it when they realized who's it was.

He’s not up there and I doubt the law enforcement agencies are feeding the MSM any real info at this point. Loose lips sink ships....

We spent a nice Christmas there in the early 70’s and I’ve been there numerous times as a boy scout.

Yeah... the problem here is because he killed cops all of these resources are thrown at finding him. People get killed everyday with much less fanfare, and much less effort to find the killer.

I trekked up and down it for 30 years. Grandparents lived at the base of it and I was always up there for friends, skiing, hiking, shooting, the lake and even flew into the airport a few times. I believe there is only 2 or 3 highways up that mountain (one front and one back) so he would have had to know that they could be closed off really fast. that is why i dont think he was on the mountain when that truck lit up.

Like I said a few days ago, he probably went to Lucerne Valley and kept going East, staying off the highways.

He’ll either hide in the desert until spring or he’ll try to get to Mexico.

I’m guessing that’s why he burned it- so it wouldn’t sit there unnoticed for a few weeks. “HEY LOOK! HERE I AM!”

I agree with those who think that this is misdirection, and he isn’t anywhere near where the truck got torched. If he were just hiding out up there, it would have made more sense to just stash the truck somewhere, or walk away from it without doing something that would attract attention to it.

I’d have some used beater-mobiles bought off of Craigslist for cash and never re-registered, with trunks full of resupply and hidden cash money discreetly parked here and there, as well.

He won’t last long. He’s a big, fat, black, ugly guy and can’t really blend in anywhere.

He also says he has no friends or family. He doesn’t look like a survivalist, but a guy who eats fast food.

Hy 18 was ZERO visibility. That is the main road in or out of the area. If he wasn't familiar with driving or walking in the fog, there is no telling where he is. Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead would be the perfect place to steal a car. People that live down the Hill, but have a mountain home as well often leave a vehicle for long periods of time. Might be a long time before it was discovered gone.

Consider also they are lying, that Obama explicitly ruled out aiding the embassy, and they are hiding that by saying he left all decisions with Panetta.
