Please Take Away My Right to a Gun
The New York Times ^ | January 18, 2013 | Wendy Button

A FEW years ago, I awoke at 2:30 a.m. to more than a “rapping, rapping at my chamber door.” It was a full-force pounding of a body trying to break into my little house in Washington, D.C. It was the sound and scenario that, as a single woman living alone, I feared more than spiders in the house.

Because I was writing political speeches at the time, my BlackBerry slept on the pillow beside me. I grabbed it and looked out my bedroom window at the stoop below. There he was: tall, dark clothes, big. He backed up and then raced to the door, pounding his body against it. Then he kicked at it the way actors take boots to the heads of bad guys in the movies.

I dialed 911 and ran downstairs, my 100-pound Newfoundland with me.

I gave the dispatcher my address, let her know that I lived around the corner from a police station and said, “Please hurry.” She heard the loud noise and remained on the line with me.

I put the BlackBerry on speaker and pushed a heavy armchair toward the door. I watched as the wood expanded with each pound. The white paint splintered some. The deadbolt held at the top, but the bottom half of the door popped open, letting in the steam heat from the summer night. I took that chair and slammed it so the side pushed the door back in line with the frame. I held that chair with everything my 5 foot 3 inches had. My dog sat right by me on the rug, ready...

Unfortunatly this author didn't think this whole thing through. What if the police station wasn't just around the corner?

What if the assailant broke the door down and got to her?

What if he had been in the position to rape and kill her?

She's ok with not having protection?

Don’t you love the “...I’m a former Republican and a life-long hunter, but...” stories?

Exactly... former republican? How screwed up are these people?

Life long hunter? Doubtful. I do know some hunters that are liberal, and they are one short of a dozen.

What is it about liberals and depression?

I guess I would be depressed to if I were a ... oh, never mind; its redundant.

Using her logic, why not remove her access to any sort of OTC drugs such as aspirin, forbid knives, heck, make sure that she can’t injure herself in any fashion. Hmmmm, perhaps confine her on the chance that she might do herself harm? A tad extreme, yeah.

Here’s the thing. Most of us are sufficiently responsible to know whether or not we should have a gun and how to care for it. To those who do not want that responsibility—do not get one. Don’t buy, borrow or steal one. For those of us who are adequately responsible—buy one and be the responsible person who cares for his or her family and friends as necessary.

I do believe that some people should not have guns and we already have plenty of laws on the books dealing with that issue. Just enforce those laws and be done with it.

As for the automatic weapons and like that—the odds are that we will not have a need for them, and I devoutly hope that we never do, but when the criminals know that we are unarmed, we are at our most vulnerable. Should said criminals opt to run in packs, so to speak, then we might well need weapons that can be used accordingly.

Given a choice, I’d prefer to be better armed than my attacker. It’s that simple.

Sorry, I missed the part where she noted that the NRA wants to REQUIRE her to own a gun against her wishes. Can someone point that out for me?

Good grief! I’ve never seen such an orgy of hand-wringing and self-hatred. These people are helpless and would not defend themselves if their babies were being strangled in front of them. Hobbits are more dangerous than this bunch of whiners.

I agree with her. She shouldn’t have a gun. Just leave me the heck out of the equation.

Yep. I read some of them as well.

One poster even commented about the “only acceptable reason to limit rights” is to increase some perceived benefit (common good) for everybody.

These people are dangerous. Maybe we can require them to give up their voting rights if they give up their 2nd amendment rights. They are obviously having self control problems.

I read the article and the comments and I came away believing that a majority of NYT readers have mental problems. Maybe it is the reading of the NYT their whole lives that is the culprit.

Conservative: Suffers depression thinks they shouldn’t have a gun: Doesn’t buy one

Liberal: Suffers depression thinks they shouldn’t have a gun: Wants guns BANNED.

Yes, Virginia, there IS a difference.

Wendy Button is a former political speechwriter.

If she wrote this theme, she may be a former political speech writer, but she's a current loon.

“Finally, someone suffering from a depression may not through her propaganda project her own neuroses on the whole society to deprive it of its unalienable rights.”

Nice to see a response from you, Nathan!

Wendy Button is the type of liberal woman who — in a conversation with a pro-life conservative — would utter something to the effect of, “if you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one!”

Ms. Button, if you don’t want to shoulder your Second Amendment rights, you don’t have to!
Wendy, if you don’t want to own a gun, don’t buy one!

Yeah, my wife and kids can shoot all of my weapons including AK-varients, AR-varients, shot guns, and pistols. My wife and daughter are both very good with a pistol (wife is definitely better than me). My son is a great shot with all weapons.

As for liberals being afraid of firearms and thinking that the police will protect them, they are wrong on both accounts. Familiarity and training make for the safe operation and ownership of firearms. The journalist who wrote the article was very lucky that nothing bad happened to her, but in her case, suffering from depression and requiring medication, she may want to marry a guy to take care of her or possibly get a very large and protective dog.

The police do the best they can but usually they arrive just in time to draw a chalk line around you. So, in all things, it makes sense to be as self-sufficient as possible.
