Chicago Outfit mobster Frank Calabrese Sr. died on Christmas Day at the age of 75 while serving a life sentence at the federal facility in Butner, NC as reported by Bridget Doyle for the Chicago Tribune:
"[Federal prosecutor T. Markus] Funk said Wednesday that those hurt by Calabrese's criminal actions would likely find it hard 'to muster much regret' over his death behind bars. 'Calabrese reigned as one of the nation's most prolific and feared mob killers, only to die alone and far from home on Christmas Day,' Funk wrote in an email Wednesday. 'Whether this qualifies as poetic justice, or the sad final chapter of a largely squandered existence, is for others to decide.'"
Calabrese was convicted on racketeering charges involving multiple murders in the 2007 Family Secrets trial after his son Frank Jr. became a wired cooperator for the feds, and in commenting on the old man's death the mob scion said "I am comfortable with the fact that he's not suffering in there anymore and that no one else has to suffer on the street."
In all Calabrese was convicted of thirteen murders spanning from 1970 through 1986 at his 2007 racketeering trial, and each of them is recounted in grisly detail by Mitch Dudek for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Frank Jr. is bringing his family's story to the silver screen as reported by Dane Placko for My Fox Chicago: "'This is about the dark side of crime,' he said."
Unlike the fed. govt., when you paid your protection money to the mob at least you got what you paid for.
Is there a bright side?
As opposed to what? The lighter side of crime?
WTF is the dif between him and the bastards we have in the white hut now? They are all mobsters from Chitcago.
His grandfather was our landlord for years.. He was a cheap bas#ard, that wouldn’t turn on the heat in the winter until he had his coffee in the mornings no matter how cold it was.. We would put our clothes on the radiator waiting for the heat to warm up our britches.. LOL
This guy would visit his grandpa with his siblings, and was a whoosy little jerk as a kid..
If only Chicago had guns outlawed forty years ago, Calabrese wouldn’t have killed all those guys. //sarc
My late father grew up with Frank Dragna, Jack Dragna’s son in Los Angeles....they went to school together, and used to hang out from time to time.
I remember after my father passed away, going through old photos; photos of him hanging out with Mickey Cohen, Johnny Stampanato, and my fave, him and Sam Giancana.
Heh.....my dad always said he knew “interesting people”. He wasn’t kidding, LOL!
YIKES! Sam “MO” Giancana, was “That Guy” was notorious for not wanting his picture taken in his early years.. I once was told to stop looking at him at the next table.. I wasn’t looking at him, I was looking at Phylis McGuire who was with him.. GULP!
And the flags in Chicago are flying at half mast.
Heh.
I also remember photos of my dad (and mom) with Lefty Rosenthal and one of my parents sitting at a table with Lefty, Tony Spilotro and an unidentified woman.
This would’ve been around ‘73 or ‘74.
Now my late uncle Vito, well now.....that’s a whole different story!! He knew some big-time players! The best part.....yes, his name really was Vito (Vittorio) and he was my godfather. LOLOLOLOLOL!
With a name like Vito, he had an “IN”.. LOL I grew up with these Chicago FAMILIES, I played with their kids, and they were just Dad’s and Uncles.. We were all in the same boat as far as being Italian, and grouped into a stereotype, depending on what Hollywood was promoting at the time..
Thanks AtlasStalled. Good riddance.
